I purchased a '68 Coupe last week, and am confused about the cowl tag number which reads:
06A
ST 68-12437 NOR 147846 BODY
TR 712 O2 PAINT
My question is shouldn't the sequence number on a'68 begin with a 3? The 6A indicates it was built in the first week of June (correct?The vin is: 124378N447S2
Can some knowledgeable one advise me? - Thanks - Chris

Chris,
Here is how the data decodes:
1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
8 = 1968 model year
N = Norwood, OH assembly plant
447___ = vehicle serial number sequence

Decode for body number: 147846

06A = Built the First week of June.
68-12437 = Coupe.
NOR = Built in Norwood Ohio.
712 = Standard Black Bucket Seats.
O-2 = Lower Color is Corvette Bronze and the Vinyl Top Color is Black.

The body number started at 1 where as the vin number started with 300000. The vin number that you gave does not have enough digits for the sequence number and should be all numbers (44752_)?
Hope this helps,

I thought the 712 interior is the
Customweave bucket interior which to me is an upgrade from the standard 711. Im a newbie here but trying to learn.
thanks

That would be true if the car was a 69, but this is a 68. You might want to check out this link: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#InteriorColors

Kurt - Sorry for the delay, been away for the holiday weekend, working on the car. It turns out the floors have been replaced (badly), as well as the trunk. The Vin is 124378N447525. The car appears to originally have been a nice Corvette Bronze coupe with a black vinyl roof. It must have had a 327, with a Saginaw 4 speed, and standard black vinyl interior. The guy I bought it from installed a 'racing' 350 ('82-'84 vintage) with Edelbrock 4 barrel, and some sort of automatic with a cheapo B&M shifter. They eliminated the power steering pump (but not the steering box- just cut the hose. The front end's a mess, and it drives like a truck, but it's a fairly straight car, and has a lot of potential. Probably a bit of bondo here and there too. Thanks for the help - Chris .

10 or 12 bolt?
The axle code will tell us if it is original. It's located on the passenger side axle tube. Look under 'Decoding' on the CRG website for a great sketch of the location. http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#RearAxleNumbers

Thanks and good luck!

Your VIN is correct, while its true the VIN sequence started at 300001 for 1968 models, but the 300,000 range would change to the 400,000 range after 100,000 units made. Yours was built in June of 1968 and was the 147,525 car built this model year at Norwood. The count went to near 500,000.

Kurt - Unfortunately it has the standard 10 bolt rearend, with c-clips. I will be converting it to a nice 12-bolt (hopefully without c-clips) in the future (any suggestions). Also,will be adding front disc brakes to replace front drums. I'll probably convert the car to an SS (non-Rally Sport), since the drive train's non-original. Other than that, the car will be restored back to original specs,in Corvette Bronze,but without the vinyl roof (don't trust them). - Chris S.
