Hello, What I found was a 69 X33 Z/28, Heres the trim tag:
ST69 12437NOR28587?BDY
711 69 69PNT
02A X33
From what I can tell it was Cortez Silver w/ black standard interior and built in Feb. It's a Z/28 w/ style trim.
What I can't figure out is that it doesnt have a tach.,only 120 MPH speedo., No console.
I have read that all z's after Jan. had tachs. Did they all have 140MPH speedos?
Next question: The car has a 12 bolt, 4 speed, disc. brakes (big) cowl hood, no spoiler. It has no windshield trim, no wiper motor, no grill, minor undercarriage rust, minor rust in wheelwells, no emblems, and a few other minor things. The motor was not where I could see it but, he said it goes w/ the car but is "trashed". ok. to the question.
I can buy this car for $8500, The body is good w/ new maroon paint.... Is it worth it for me to buy and try to resell for a profit?
Thanks for your answers and sorry for the lengthy inquiry.

Hello,
I can't answer the "can you make a profit" question but here are a few comments for you to consider.
Is the thrashed motor the original?
Are the 12 bolt and the 4 speed original to the car?
If you are going to restore it to original (or close to it) the nice Maroon paint doesn't help.
Does the VIN match up with the build date? The last 6 digits of the VIN should be between 592000 and 600000 (approx. #)
I personally have never seen a 140 MPH speedometer in A Z/28 and I've seen many.
I also thought any Z/28 ordered after Jan. of 69 had to have "special instrumentation"
Just some food for thought.
Doug

Z28's after mid May of 69 had the gauges as a mandatory option, as were spoilers. It was effective for any car built after May 19th 1969. Same day Chambered exhaust was no longer installed on any Camaro. Chambered exhaust was deleted from any car on the assembly line effective 19 May and was replaced with the N10 dual exhaust with a credit noted to the buyer for the difference.

The replies you have received so far are the best info you can get. Again the burning question is are you going to try to restore it to original like condition or just build it as you want to and drive. $8,500.00 is not too bad if the shell is in good condition and the rest of the car is there. Is there a motor in it now besides the so called original? The addition of another motor may make it worth the price. It all depends on what the deal is worth to you. Prices on Camaros varies by region also.

One more tidbit...my 05A Z does not have gauges/console/Tach. It was an option at that time, at least according to McNeish's book as well as other sources. My documentation/window sticker does not show a tach. Hope this helps........but theat's not the real issue. The real issue is profit. That's a real "iffy" question. Many a divorce started out this way. The cars going for respectable sums are the ones that are as original/correct as possible, and then worth what someone is willing to pay. Research suggests that those cars that are complete/correct/documented, will bring more money. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Thank you all for your answers. I think the divorce thing might be the deciding factor on wether or not to buy the car. The car has a 500 hp aluminum head small block for an extra $4000, I told him I would pass on that.... He claims that the 302 has something messed up with the crank and journals?? He also says it was the original motor. The car was parked for 13 w/ the motor "trashed". If he had painted it the original color and the car was "all there" it would be an easy decision. But, I think I may have to let this one go and kick myself 5 years from now. By the way, the car is in Missouri but,is originally from Minnesota.
Another thing that makes me want it is the factory rosewood wheel w/ one small crack in it.
Again, Thanks for the help!

Console gauges were not mandatory, however, I believe a tach was..I had a VERY late 69 Z that had no console but a tach and a small fuel gauge were the clock would normally go.

The Tach was not mandatory initialy. It was mandatory for later production but I am not sure of the cutoff date. Someone said Jan 2, 69 but I do not consider the source reliable.

My Z is 05A, and has no Tach. The car is well documented. Maybe later ones did?
