I recently purchased what I believed to be a 68 Camaro SS. It says SS on the side and Grill. It has the SS hood and hideaway headlights, but a friend of mine told me that it may not be a real SS. Is it possible to tell using the VIN number? If so could someone help me.
The VIN is 124378N379158. If there is any other info I need to decode please tell me. Thanks a lot.

You need to check the engine code and VIN on the engine. If it's not the original engine, there's really no way to prove it's an SS or not. Check the codes on the engine on the passenger side just in front of the cylinder head. Let us know what is stamped on the engine and also let us know what is on the cowl tag on the firewall just above the master cylinder to the left.

Lisa, give us all the information off the cowl tag next to the master cylinder. The hideaway headlights are part of the RS package, not SS. Alot of people add those headlights. Does it have the backup lights below the bumper or are they part of the taillights. Is the car a original auto or std trans. 10 bolt or 12 bolt rearend. Single leaf springs or multi leafs in rear. Is the original tire size sticker still on the inside of the glovebox door. If so what does it say for a size.
