: Fac. rear spoiler Z or not
68SS396 Oct 30th, 00, 02:54 AM My brother in law has a 69 RS/Z that was originally sold from Scuncio Chevrolet in RI. I am curious to know if it is a original spoiler car or not. The trunk lid is original and has both sets of holes for the emblem. The heavy duty trunk rod is there for the original factory spoiler cars but the cowl tag only has X33 and almost positive no D80. Is that possible? He has had the car for years. It seems to be a factory spoiler car but its strange that it doesn't have the D80 even though it has the X33. I have a database so I know the vin is in line with the cowl tag and nothing has definately been switched. So can a factory spoiler car be missing the D80 during a time where the D80 should be there
mx321@btigate.com Oct 30th, 00, 07:41 AM Can you post the build date? On the early Z cars the rear spoiler was an option, mid year the spoilers were standard with the Z/28 .
I,m not sure on the D80 question but I think when the spoilers became standard the D80 was deleted. My car is an X33(no D80) and has spoilers but my biuld date is Feb 1969 so they were std. When I get home tonight I'll check my books on the D80 question. Cary

68SS396 Oct 30th, 00, 07:59 AM I can post it tomorrow as I don't have the info handy. However I believe its a later car as the vin was either 124379N64 or 68. I didn't know the spoiler became std at some point but it would make sense that they would not bother with the D80 after they became std
William Oct 30th, 00, 12:59 PM Earliest known car with the D80 code is 05D. Standard or not all seem to have the code from then on.
A somewhat reliable way of checking for factory spoilers is a hole for the center front spoiler bracket in the brace between the front frame crossmembers.
mccorry Oct 30th, 00, 02:31 PM William...are you talking about a small hole in the center of the "horn" that comes off the crossmember? My car has such a hole (5 mm or so).
68SS396 Oct 31st, 00, 02:36 AM Thanks for the info guys. I was a little off in memory as the cars vin is 9N62 and its a 04C car. So if the D80 didn't start until 05D that would explain the lack of the code. I'll have to check the frame next time I see the car. Thanks again all.
KevinW Oct 31st, 00, 05:33 AM I have another question, a little off topic.
My Oct 68 car has a factory short rear spoiler (verified), but no hole in the subframe for a front spoiler. I had heard that a 68 front spoiler mounted differently then a 69, since a 68 rear spoiler was used, a 68 front spoiler could have been used as well. Would this account for the no hole?
To further confuse, the front sheet metal has been changed and the new lower valence has the spoiler holes. Subframe has what looks like 30 year old dounuts (what's left of them) original engine, so I think the subframe is original.
Thanks, Kevin

Mark C Oct 31st, 00, 06:06 AM 68 spoilers did not use any support bracketry. They hung straight down and only attached to the sheetmetal of the lower valance. The shorter braces offered in various parts suppliers for 68 camaros never existed from the factory.
Don't know off hand when the 69 style of spoiler with the end and center brace rods became available, but I don't think it is tied to the long rear spoiler introduction, as some D80 cars as late as March and April of 69 were still getting the short spoiler, while others got the long spoiler. The only cars that consistantly got the long spoiler were the pace cars.

X77D80 Oct 31st, 00, 07:39 AM 68SS396 - There is an X33 car I know of locally with a build date of 12D (68) and it has no spoilers and no D80 code. My car is an X77D80 car and it's build date is 11A, 1969 very late car and it does have the D80 code. According to Jerry MacNeish, the D80 equipment was optional until April of 69, then becoming part of the Z28 package.
Thanks for letting me add to the confusion.

JohnZ Oct 31st, 00, 04:48 PM My '69 Z (02D - late February) is an X33 car and has D80 with the short rear spoiler; as with many Norwood cars, it doesn't have D80 on the cowl tag. The car is an untouched original, with D80 on the original price sticker and on the GM of Canada documentation as well. It appears that February was the last month where rear spoilers were mixed lengths.

mx321@btigate.com Oct 31st, 00, 06:56 PM John Z,
My Z/28 is an X33 car with a build date of 02D also. My car has the wide spoiler. I'll e-mail my VIN # to see how far apart our cars were built.
How did you verify your car was a Canadian model? I have no Doc's with my car and it spent 25+ years of it's life in a town 20 miles from the Canadian border. Who knows it could be from Canada also. I just got the phone # of the 2nd owner of the car today. I'll have to ask him when I get ahold of him. Cary
