View Full Version : Help decoding a 68 cowl tag
Sid Coleman May 29th, 01, 05:42 PM Hi guys! I'm a member of the Chevelle board, doing this for my cousin. He's got a 68 that he thinks may be an original big block car, without the original engine. Cowl tag numbered as follows:
10C N411
ST6812437 LOS
07736
713 YY (or Y2)
As for the engine, he was told it was a 74 454 that was built up. Code on the front of the block is C9F208534
Numbers he needs help with are the 10C, N411 and the 07736. Any of these prove or disprove a big block car in 68?
THanks all!!
68RS/SS396 May 29th, 01, 06:10 PM One good way to tell if it is a big block car is to look where the heater hoses enter the firewall. If they go thru the middle of the blower motor box, it is a big block. If they go to the right side of it, it is a small block. But remember, they do make repos of the big block blower motor box. Hope this helps. Erik
Sid Coleman May 29th, 01, 06:22 PM Thanks Erik.
Now for the other particulars: it's a manual steering car with 4 wheel drum brakes, no power assist, has the SS badging. Any other clues to look for to id a factory SS car?
68RS/SS396 May 29th, 01, 06:35 PM As far as the drum brakes goes. Disc brakes are just an option on a 68, not required for SS. My 68 SS has 4 wheel drums. Also, None of the numbers on the tag of a 68 will verify the engine size or weather or not it is a ss or not. Another item to look at is the springs, If it is a SS it will have multi-leaf springs not mono leaf. (I believe)

Kurt S May 30th, 01, 08:12 AM This is a hard one to prove. See the 68ID table on the CRG site.
10C is 3rd week of Oct (67)
N411 is an internal LA code
07736 is the body #.
713 is a blk bench seat.
Y-Y is yellow. Y-2 would be yellow with black vinyl.
Original 12 bolt (you'll need the code from the axle tube. See the sketch on CRG under 'Decoding")?
Could you post the VIN for the car?
Thanks!

Sid Coleman May 30th, 01, 05:49 PM Kurt,
I'll see if I can get the VIN. Code on the axle decoded to 3:31 posi, which seems right when compared using the "wheel turning" count the yoke method. Leaf's are multi-spring. Original fuel line has been removed, so can't check that. Did not find any exhaust hangers welded to the frame in the rear, however they may have been removed for clearance-has a 3" system on it now.
Heater box has the hoses coming thru. Either a factory SS or a good makeover.
Where is the "CRG" site you mention? Duh-is that the link on ur sig? If so, I'm getting a "no connect" message.
Thanks!!
Sid

Kurt S May 31st, 01, 02:45 PM Thanks on trying to get the VIN.
Post the complete axle code and we'll see if it matches the car.
The CRG site is up now.

Sid Coleman Jun 1st, 01, 02:49 PM Rear axle codes are BS. Still waiting on VIN.
Kurt S Jun 2nd, 01, 01:03 PM To tell if the axle is original, we need the complete code, like BS1028G2.
