Hi all..will the vin# on a 69 indicate if the car is a true SS? I might be making an offer on my first Camaro, but it's at a dealer so I'm a little leary. Any other SS indicators would be appreciated. Thanks.

if you post the vin and trim tag someone will decode it for you. if you search and read through previous post they will tell you what to look for. some things are 5 spring leaf springs, 12 bolt rear, rear plate welded to the frame on the driver side for dual exhaust hanger, disc brakes up front, 4 barrel quad jets had 2 fuel lines, different header box for big block, side the speedo cable is on, etc.
unfortunately it sort of hard to prove a car is an ss unless you have a pop or the build sheet or some other docs and these can be faked.
unless the car is a later norwood car with an x code, there is no way to tell if it is a true ss and even then it is only good for 396 cars (no x code for a ss 350).
if it's a v-8 car then the vin will begin with 12437
X11 - Style Trim Group (includes SS350)*
*There is no specific X-code for the SS350. X11 could mean SS350 with Style Trim or base car with Style Trim.
X22 - Style Trim Group with SS396 (black rear panel)
X33 - Style Trim Group with Special Performance Equipment (Z28)
X44 - Base car
X55 - Base car with SS350 (rear fender louvers, black body sill)
X66 - Base car with SS396 (rear fender louvers, black rear panel, black body sill)
X77 - Base car with Special Performance Equipment(Z28)
Z11 - Indy Pace Car Accents
Z10 - Indy Pace Car Accents - Hardtop
D80 - Air Spoiler Equipment (when used - not all cars built with spoilers were coded)

Check the hood springs. The hood springs on an SS have 28 coils versus 26 in non-SS cars. The extra coils were needed to help lift the hood with the extra weight of the hood ornaments.
