View Full Version : numbers
camp07 Feb 15th, 05, 04:36 PM ok...here are my engine numbers
Head Cast #: 3947041
block cast #: 3932388
block serial #: T06I HB
and my vin and trim tag are in the "d90 striping" post if u need to see them.
Just wanting to make sure my engine/heads are # matchin to my car...thanks a ton everyone!
csn69ss Feb 15th, 05, 04:50 PM You have the same heads as on my 69 SS 350, look for the casting date also.
Your engine number is the SS 350 for aut. trans and assembled in Tonawanda June 1 - is there a digit missing in the date?
Does your block also have VIN number stamped by the oilfilter area or at the left head?
Also look for casting date on the back of the block.

so if can...see what gives with the d90 striping BUT ALSO...if someone could see if my trim tag and Vin match up right! thanks guys
Just to keep your VIN and build date in one thread, makes it easier.
Your car is first week of June 1969 and your engine is also June - thats pretty close.
camp07 Feb 15th, 05, 06:09 PM so can u tell by these numbers if its number matchin or is there more numbers some where else?
csn69ss Feb 15th, 05, 06:17 PM You need to find the VIN stamp on the engine and transmission to determine wether is numbers matching or not.
Also look for codes on the rear axle.
Eric Kammerer Feb 15th, 05, 06:27 PM As csn said, there may be a VIN stamp on the block above the oil filter, on the flange where the bellhousing and block mate. I assume there are no extra numbers on the pad you got the TO6I HB from. If there were they'd be the VIN. Should be N66145.
Block casting is 69 only, and is good for a 69 350. The head castings are 69-70, and would be right for a 69 350. You could get the dates (more numbers near the block casting, and in another open spot in the valvetrain area of the heads) to be sure, but it looks pretty good.
If you find the VIN, it's a GM stamp, and it matches, there's no doubt. Without the VIN, it still looks good.
69VanNuys Feb 15th, 05, 06:45 PM Can anyone describe in detail where the VIN stamping is in early model 69s from Van Nuys? Not the pad on the front of the engine, but the stamp done by the oil filter. I have been looking for the stamp but cannot find it! Thanks.
Eric Kammerer Feb 15th, 05, 07:01 PM Good diagram in this previous thread...

camp07 Feb 15th, 05, 07:11 PM so u say i need the vin number on the block to know for sure if its number matching. I will look for that next time i go work on it. You said it is near the oil filter?
camp07 Feb 15th, 05, 07:12 PM Also was it normal to have a tonawanda built engine and a norwood built car (like mine)?
Eric Kammerer Feb 15th, 05, 07:40 PM Look at the diagram to show where the VIN may be stamped.
And yes, a Tonawanda engine could be in a Norwood car.
Kurt S Feb 15th, 05, 08:28 PM Those diagrams came from the CRG site. smile.gif
Looking under Decoding.
And the engine code is missing a digit. Should be 4 numbers in the middle, not 3.
69SSConvertible Feb 16th, 05, 02:01 AM I have a 06A X33 with VIN 661xxx, so we are real close. Mine is even Cortez Silver!
Your car is a little before mine, which should mean around June 20, not first week, as all June cars are 06A.
Mark C Feb 16th, 05, 02:12 AM What's the casting date of your 388 block? By June of 69 most 350's and 302s were using 010 blocks. The 386 blocks were used in early production cars (up to about January of 69), the 388 and 618 was mid year (about January to April) and the 010 was late (after April). (from CBTN)
There are always overlaps in block useage and left over blocks from previous castings floating about. You've got a real late casting for that engine if it was cast after March or April.

I have been looking for the stamp but cannot find it! Thanks. 69VanNuys - the VIN by the oil filter is very hard to read and may be covered up. Also, the location is rough cast, making it difficult to see. If you're block has heavy paint on it, or some grease, you may not be able to see it at all. You may need to sand/scrub it down some.
Here's a link to view mine to give you an idea what to look for.
