Is there anyway to get a build sheet made for a car. Maybe like you could contact GM and give them your vin # and they send a build sheet or anything like that? Im looking for a Chevelle and a Camaro that I have. Please Help. :(

I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt it. Canadian built GM vehicles have better documentation than US built cars, but I would say that your chances of getting a duplicate build sheet are slim and none. LA built cars have been known to have theirs, but it's rare for a Norwood car to have one. Good luck and take care.

If it's not in the car there is no source for getting a new one. A lot of the LA built cars have a chassis broadcast sheet glued on the top of the gas tank on the drivers side front corner. Norwood cars don't have them as a rule. If you find one in a norwood built car it got left in there by accident and could just as likely belong to another car built at the same time. It's an old wives tale that they are in the rear seat springs, or on top of the glove box.
You can't even get a build sheet from GM for cars SOLD (not built) in Canada. The only documentation GM of Canada has is a computer generated listing of the car, it's VIN and Trim tAg info, it's option codes and dealer the car was originally delivered to.

So how does the Insurance Companys know what engine the car originally came with by the Vin numbers?

Its coded in the VIN :
12437 = V8 coupe
12467 = V8 Convert
12337 = 6cyl coupe
12367 = 6cyl Convert
The insurance Co.'s out there pretty much know how to break the vin down

Mark C, Im curious about what you posted. I may be confused here but are we talking about the build sheet being rare in Norwood cars or the body broadcast sheet? Kevin

There are no 'build sheets' (which have the RPO also listed on them) in first gens, only broadcast sheets.

The only documentation GM of Canada has is a computer generated listing of the car, it's VIN and Trim tAg info, it's option codes and dealer the car was originally delivered to. [/QB]To expand upon your explanation Mark, the paperwork many refer to as Build Sheets here in Canada are technically called an RPO Options Sheet and and they are issued by GM Vintage Vehicles in Canada. Anyone can request this document from GM for a car shipped into Canada and sold by a GM of Canada dealer. You can also get them for Chevelle's, and Impala's built in Canada, and can also obtain this document for Camaro's built in Canada during later years. In fact, they keep records of all GM cars built in Canada, as well as US Built cars sold in Canada.
The files they have are actually on microfiche and are not a computer generated listing as you mention. The micro fiche files list multiple cars on them from Yenko's to Coupes whereby they note the VIN, Dealer Code, Paint Code, Interior Code, Factory Order Number and a complete list of RPO codes that any given car was ordered and shipped with. They do not reference the X Codes on any given car as that info is only on the trim tag and is not available on the micro fiche. If someone then requests a copy of the GM Data on record for a Canadian sold Camaro, the option codes are then typed onto a GM letterhead and are sent to the person requesting the info. The build sheets will denote if a car is a ZL/1, Copo, Yenko, Z/28, Rallysport, Supersport, or Coupe.
This information is regarded as being highly sought after because it is considered as a difinitive and factual guideline of how the car was built/shipped and is the only GM verified information available to verify a cars build info today. Hopefully that clears this up for some and draws a more complete picture of a GM of Canada document. Yes these are the ones that are often refered to as a "build sheet". Call them what you want, but they are the only ones issued by GM "PERIOD".
I have a great collection of them along with my cars and can tell you much of what you need to know about this paperwork or the micro fiche files. I have friends who have some of the micro fiche files. I am sure that Kurt can confirm this for you as well as he knows George Zapora pretty well.
Here's a sample picture to show what GM Canada Documents look like.

The VIN # and Factory Order # on this document are not actual and are not from a real car.
