I've always wondered about the correlation between the last 6 numbers on the vin number and the sequence numbers on the cowel tag after the letter NOR
124379N5XXXXX Vin #
ST 69 12437NOR2XXXXX Cowel tag
So the numbers that are X how do they correlate.
Thanks Dan

There is really no correlation between them...the VIN sequence is the number of the Camaro down the assembly line, and the cowl number is the body sequence from the Fisher Body plant.

Body sequence,explain??
Number of cars built that day, shift or week? Hey I often wonder how a particuler Dealership who ordered a certain car kept track of it,was the vin number and cowel tag assigned at the same time????
Thanks

Dealers tracked ordered cars initially by an "ident" number that was assigned to the order when it was submitted and cleared by their zone office; when the order was accepted at Chevrolet Central Office and scheduled for production at the plant, the VIN number (the one on the hinge pillar or instrument panel) was assigned, and that number was used to report and track its status through the various stages from paper order to finished car.

Hey I notice in a book that Jerry McNeish wrote that he shows original window stickers on some very special Camaro's.Up in the right hand corner is the number 286031,to the left of this is the Dealership name and address and to the left of this is the number 09 239.Vin # on this car is 124379N638868. Is this 286031 the original number assigned by the zone office when the order was placed by the Dealership,"ident" number???

Yes - the number at the upper right corner of an original window sticker is the "Ident number", which was indirectly related to the dealer order number. The "09 239" is the zone and dealer number.

Thanks John.
One last thing, could the ident number 286031 be found to match the sequence number on the cowel tag??
