: Trim Tag Discrepancy
rjphil Dec 10th, 02, 03:29 AM I own a beautifully restored 67 RS Convertible. The car has all correct RS badging. It has a 327/210 with powerglide. The protect-o-plate which appears to be real describes the car exactly including the correct engine stamping V0202ME. The trim plate describes the car as a RS/SS 4-speed. All dates seem consistant. I can not believe the car would be modified from a SS to an RS. Can the Trim Plate be in error? The following are the cars numbers:
VIN. 124677N196759
Protect-o-plate
E NN 124677N196759 B
V0202ME PA0309G W
T7C14 1 3
Trim Plate
03C E
67-12667 NOR 91214
765Z N-2
E 2LGR 3L
4P 5Y
Kyvox Dec 10th, 02, 04:54 AM Is the VIN stamped on the engine block? If it is, and it matches the VIN on the dash, I would suspect that the cowl tag has been switched.
Does the car still have the original fuel line? What size is it: 5/16" or 3/8"?
Is it possible that the 4P is actually 4F (remote OS mirror?)
Does it have a 10 bolt or 12 bolt rear end? Can you get the numbers off of the axle tube, and post them?
click Dec 10th, 02, 04:58 AM Here is your decode Phil
Im not a 67 owner but you think its a 327/210 yet the numbers suggest 327-275
I hope some of the engine gurus can comment on it. Feel free to surf the numbers site at www.camaros.org (http://www.camaros.org) yourself too.

elcamino Dec 10th, 02, 07:58 AM Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
The dates line up
W on POP is for March 1967
03C on Trim Tag is 3rd week of March 1967
Axle was built on March 09, 1967
Trasn was built on March 14, 1967
Engine was built on Feb 02, 1967
The VIN and body number are within the time period.
So is there an error on the Trim Tag?
Did someone do some switching?
Did they use another body with this VIN and POP?
With restored cars, there is always the possibility of all these things. A lot of people see nothing wrong with doing any of this.
You are going to have to search for the hidden VIN derivative's..

The vin does not line up with the body number. I would check for the partial hidden vin# on the body. That will at least tell you if the tag was swapped or the vin was.

Mark C Dec 10th, 02, 08:18 AM The 4P on the trim plate indicates the car is a small block and has a radius rod, not that it is an SS. The only small blocks that got the radius rod were L48s (SS's) and L30s (not SS's). Remeber, Fisher Coach put the trim tags on the cars and for the most part could not care less what engine went in the car. The only reason they coded that 4P was becasue there was a reinforcement plate that went under the passenger side rear seat that the radius rod attached to. The radius rod and the rear axle were installed by GM.
Haven't quite figured out what is different on the body (firewall back) of a 4K (big block), or 4L (Z28) coded car that differed from the 4P designation, but there must be something.

Where are the 1 and the 3 located on the POP in regards to lining up under the VIN on the POP. Is 1 under the 1 of the VIN ??
The car shows it was a Base V8 Model that had a 327/210 powerglide tranny from the factory. The trim tag shows a larger HP engine that had a 4 speed tranny.
I would bet the Trim tag has been swaped out > check the partial VIN in the Cowl Vent area on the passengers side of the car by looking through the vents towards the front of the vents.

choptop Dec 10th, 02, 08:24 AM Looks as though the trim tag might have been swapped for the original since everything else seems to match. I doubt that the factory would place a base model engine into a more highly optioned car, but they might do the reverse if the normal engine was in short supply.
I would follow advice already given and see if you can find some additional numbers on the block (castings and vin). Might not hurt to see if you can find any hidden vins on the car to verify the body too.
Can you contact the previous owner(s)? Maybe they have some insight!

Kurt S Dec 10th, 02, 11:00 AM Daniel got it right. One of the tags have been swapped. I'd guess the trim tag but find the partial VIN's and we'll know for sure.
No way of telling if that tag is from a L30/M20 or a SS350 car.

Flatt67 Dec 10th, 02, 12:53 PM Isn't there a simple possibility that there is an error on one of the two??
67ss350camaro Dec 10th, 02, 02:45 PM Tim,
If the vin# was correct for the build date on the trim tag, I might be willing to say that the trim tag was in error, but the data does not line up.

rjphil Dec 10th, 02, 04:17 PM Thanks for the valuable input to my question. I am beginning to believe the trim tag was swapped. The engine stamping number matches the pop and confirms it is a 327/210, powerglide. I do not understand why the vin and body number do not match. Where can I find more info on the body number sequence dates? Also I am having a hard time locating a partial vin. There is nothing on the engine stamping and the inside of cowl vent has been painted. Is there anywhere else to look. Thanks.

click Dec 11th, 02, 02:07 PM Under the cowl vent I could not 'see' my partial vin either, so I removed the cowl trim piece, it was easy. Then saw a dim outline of numbers painted over. So sanded it down to expose the numbers and confirmed them. A repaint will be easy since its hidden inside so well.
good luck
