Can anyone with another '68 z that has Smog please tell me the correct Smog Pump #.
Is it 7806686? Macneish calls for pump number 7801512, and I've also been told it's 7801149. Was a variety of pumps used during the model year?
I have a May 5 Engine.

Thanks
Rob

The assembly part number is the one Jerry referenced. The 7801149 is the casting number of the rear piece. The pump has a relief valve on top. Read Jerry's book, there is a good photo in it. There are green and black plugs in the valve. These pumps were used on 68 Z/28 and BB cars so they're hard to find. The date code is stamped on the side usually in the machined boss. The format is the Julian calendar. The rest of the stuff is the same as the L30 and L48 except the diverter valve and pulley. Hope this helps.

Martin,
Thanks for your response.
I have been told that the Pump brackets are different from the regular brackets becuse of the high rise aluminum manifold.
Do you know if this is true?
Also, I have a May 5 engine build.
I assume that a pump with a late March or early April date would be what to look for.
Anyone?

Ijust walked out in the garage to check mine (68Z). The casting number is 7801149, with a date of 157 (Early June). The car is a 7B assembly date. The car is pretty much a survivor, and usually proves to be pretty good as an indicator for dates. The dates are usually very close to the build date of the car.

bbd564 Can you tell me about the brackets.
Are they the same as regular v8 as Martin has said,
I've seen a set of brackets for sale and the add claimed they were different. Maybe just a way to get a few extra bucks.

graemlins/clonk.gif i forgot to mention.
I've come accross a pump for sale cast #7801149 with a relief valve and a date stamp of 10031Y.
The 3 must have been stamped incorrectly? as this is a '68 year only pump.
100 days would be the 10th of April. That would be a good date for a May 5 engine build.

I've seen 7801149 smog pumps on later model cars (70 71 72 73) and would read 10031Y as assembled the 100th day of 1973.

Thanks z28doug
That would be true except for the '68 relief valve being on top. As you know that's gone for '69 & up even though the number is the same.

I didn't realize 68 was the only year for the relief valve. Maybe the 3 in question is actually an 8 that didn't strike flat on the stamping surface??

That's what I was thinking. Maybe it was Friday.
When your grabbing punches if you're in a hurry a 3's an 8.

When I was told the date code I asked to verify the number and came back to tell me it was definatly a 3.

I blieve the relief valve started with '66 model smog pumps and ended in late '68. The '66 & '67 pumps were the same, Changed for '68.
Thanks

Another possibillity is a service replacement. A later date would be possible. I had a 68 core a while back but tossed it because it was siezed. Sorry guys! graemlins/clonk.gif

oh to have that pump for parts.
That's a good thought on the service replacement.
I would think that they would have produced that pump in the '68 production run & kept the service replacements in a parts warehouse.
I don't think they would make that pump from old casting cores in '73.
Is a miss stamp a good possibility?
Can anyone shed some light on the brackets needed for the '68z pump?

I looked at the brackets on my car (z) but i don't have a std 327-350 car to look at so I am a little out on a limb here. I always thought that the small bracket used for belt adjustment was specific to the z. and the big bracket was common to both. But as I said I don't have a non hi-po car to look at. But I did find a 327 4 barrel manifold that i believe came from a 68. This supports the fact that the small adjusting bracket would be different as the mtg location on the manifold for the adjusting bracket is in a different place for the iron manifold compared to the aluminum z manifold. The guy that would know for sure is Bill Hodell. He sells smog systems and is always in Hemmings in the camaro parts section and his number would be listed. I bought a system for a previous z from him and he is very knowledgeable.

oh, if the dimensions of the small bracket would be helpful, let me know. Maybe someone could compare these to a std bracket

i just looked at the picture that you sent me. The adjusting bracket in the picture is not the same as on my car, not even close

I just stumbled across a diagram showing 68 327-350 smog pump mounting. the 327-350 adjusting bracket is what you show in your picture. The 327 adj bkt mounts to the block, not the intake as on the z/28.

Bill,
I've found a good picture of a '68 z motor.
From the angle you can't see the adjusting bracket
your talking about but the other bracket is pretty common. Same as the '67 pic I sent you
I wish I had a shot of the other side. Is that motor sweet or what graemlins/beers.gif http://www3.telus.net/public/a5a84561/z302.jpg

I guess I need a way of hosting the pictures and I don't have a host, i will email them to you. I thought my engine looked pretty decent, but the flash pictures make it look pretty bad. But at least you will see what the bracket looks like

I got your email, but I don't see a part number on my bracket. If you want post the photo I sent you and maybe someone can ID it for you

Just back from a business trip. I hurried my reply before and yes the adjuster brace is different on the Z/28. Sorry about the mis-information. It looks like several people corrected me.
