Great site, just found it via a google search. Here is my tag for my 67 rs/ss350.

ST 038 0124
TR 67-12437 LOS26600
W2L 3L R 2
4P

I have pics also, but have not figured out how to post them yet. Bought this car this Summer and I am a born again motorhead. Had a 67 RS in 1981 and a 69 in 83.

I have read up and decoded some stuff myself, but always like another opinion.

Thanks Scott

oops, forgot the 760-Z on the firewall tag. Vin number is 124377L147382. Also verified it under the cowl has same number. Speedo cable comes out the drivers side of the steering column as well. Gotta get dirty and scrape the muncie and the 12 bolt yet for more numbers.

Scott,
The 760-Z interior is Standard Black bucket seats. The vin lines up just fine to the tag. Your car is not an SS though. With the speedo cable going through on the drivers side, your car is a L30/M20. Your trans should be a cast-iron Saginaw 4-speed. When you get the drive train numbers let me know. You might want to check out these links: http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#L30M20 http://www.camaro-untoldsecrets.com/articles/spotlite2.htm

Decode for body number: 046363
11E = Built the Fifth week of November.
67-12467 = Standard Interior Convertible.
NOR = Built in Norwood Ohio.
741 = Standard Red Bucket Seats.
Z = (A50) Strato Bucket Seats.
C-2 = Lower Color is Ermine White and the Convertible Top Color is Black.

That is the casting number for the side cover on the Muncie 4-speed. There should be a partial vin on it, either at the transmission mounting flange or on top of the transmission. There also will be a date code, usually stamped vertically on the passenger side of the maincase casting at the rear surface/flange, just ahead of the extension housing.

With a build date of Dec 7, I don't think that is original to the car. I would say that the trans is at least two months too early.
For the build date on the axle, did you look on the passenger side axle tube toward the front of the car?

Yeah, scraped all over it. I could not find any numbers at all in that area. There are no raised numbers and I could not find any other numbers either. How many digits are the numbers and are they raised or not?

The date code on the axle tube is a stamped code (not raised like the casting #s). It should be 2 letters flowed by 4 numbers and then maybe another letter.
I am not sure what I was thinking last night, but the date code on the trans is not in the correct format. It should be stamped code, P7_07, the missing digit should be a letter not a number.

sudo this is what you are looking for, apox. half way between brakes and differential, facing front of car. Something has to be there but after 30+ years of paint, dirt, grease etc. Peek again with a good light, sandpaper, wire brush etc.

Somthing dosn't look right with the decode of the interior 760-Z. The 760 is the black std buckets and the 765 is the custom buckets. The added "Z" is "custom bucket seat appointments". I think this was some type of added trim option but not sure what is differnt between 760 and 760-Z.

67ss350camaro
Dec 5th, 02, 07:19 AM
JOE58,
The "Z" does not mean "custom bucket seat appointments". I know some books say this, but it is not correct. You might want to look at: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#67Codes

I looked on the CRG site and found this...."1967 tags also had a hyphenated suffix that indicated headrest type: "Z" indicated standard A50 bucket seats without headrest, "H" indicated RPO AL4 bench seats without headrest, "Y" indicated RPO AS2 headrest".
So I guess the "Z" just means no headrests?

Dec 5th, 02, 04:08 PM
Yes, Z just means bucket seats without headrest.

Thanks Dan, I been trying to figure out my 67 Camaro trim tag. The Hooper book says that "Z" is "custom bucket seat appointments." I have the Jerry M book but I did not find the Z headrest decode in there. The car also has RPO Z21 and Z23 on the trim tag code and have been finding conflicting info on what exactly these two options are in terms of actual parts. One book shows Z23 as - Inst panel peripheral molding, bright pedal pads, deluxe steering wheel, woodgrain inst panel. The car has the aluminum trim strips along inner roof top door edge but does not have the chrome plastic roof pillars. These appear to have been replaced by 68 style black roof pillars. Z21 is Style trim group which one book says should have belt reveal molding another book says that was only for 68. So it is not clear what "belt reveal molding" is. Z21 is also wheel opening moldings and bright roof drip molding. My question now is should 67 with Z23 have the large bright trim lower body molding like the RS had? My car had the plastic seat backs which I replaced with a set of metal seat backs as the info I found said 67 should only have metal seat back.

Dec 6th, 02, 07:21 AM
My 69 assembly manual shows Z21 as wheel opening chrome trim and rocker chrome trim, the Z23 shows brake pedal trim option. Do the options follow the same numbers year to year?

If you dont have that manual yet, its a great tool to have around.

Chevy's description of these options is as follows;

Z21 - Exterior Molding
Z23 - Interior Decor Package

The year and model will determine the option content. It may or may not be same from year to year and model to model.

JOE58,
Ok, let me try and answer your questions.
1) Z21 in 67 has the flowing: Bright metal trim on the wheel wells and roof drip edge. It also has pin striping on the sides of the car. It does NOT include the RS trim on the bottom of the doors.
2) Z23 in 67 has bright metal trim on the pedals (brake, gas, clutch). It also has bright metal trim on the inside roof edge and also chrome front pillar moldings.
3) Seat backs in 67 started out as metal and changed to plastic mid year (about April).
Hope this helps,

Do you know what "belt reveal molding" is? and did all 67 Camaros use the thin bright trim piece on the sill panels under the door?

JOE58,
I have not heard of the term "belt reveal molding". Could you tell me where you heard it and in what the context was I might be able to figure it out.
Yes, all 67's had door sill plates.

Belt reveal molding goes around the break line between the body and the top portion of the car, just like a belt around your body.

That's a 66 trans. They used a different code format pre-67.

I'd say that rear is about 2 weeks too late for the car.
