Can you guys tell me where to look for the engine numbers(on engine) that match cowl/vin #'s ? do I use sequence # to match or ? Quest. 2= How many 68 427's are believed to been produced, and in what option pkges, SS RS combo's ? rumor has it my 68 had 427 but ??? Anyone??? Thanks

For '68, the engine VIN stamp will be on a pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head along with the engine code. The VIN stamp will be similar to 18N###### (# = last six digits of body VIN. As far as I know, the only '68 models to get the 427 (not factory installed) were the Yenko, Baldwin-Motion, etc.

Thanks Dave, I seee now this engine for sale claiming to be the " original BB " out of my car cannot be it, the last of vin's is nowere close. However, I'm considering buying anyway for my bracket playtoy, but cant find any #'s on # sites for info. The cast in's are 3988289 BUT--could be 3999 or 3899 or 3989 cant be sure, casting flaw? Had a couple people look, all agreed on ?????(NOTHING) also "CM i0 T conv B8 74 F8 HI PERF PASS" and the stamped in's are "T0315TRH and T4B515884" The head #'s are "14096188 HI PERF GM 1 K199*CFD" Can anyone help??? Do some reading too at www.camaros.org (http://www.camaros.org) in their engine decode tab. In fact the whole site is full of info. on 1st gen cars.

Casting 3999289 is a 72 to 79 454. Could be either 2 bolt or 4 bolt mains.

Suffix code TRH and the partial VIN indicates the engine was originally in a 1974 Truck. It was identified as an LS-4 and was rated at 245HP and had a TH 400 Trans attached.

It's not a 427.
