My 68 has come to a point where I do not want to miss something as important as Standard/SS/RS identification.

VIN of 124378N00153

Body tag
036
ST 68-12437 NOR100453
TR 712 ZZ

Original motor was not included.

From my search's these few items on the car show this car may be a standard coupe.
Mono leafs.
Back up lights next to tail lights, not below bumper in the pan.
10 bolt rear end.

Other items that kinda lean toward standard.
Plain ol grill, no hide away lights.
No extra gauges.
No console.
Stearing column was for a auto, no tilt.

The only thing on the car at purchase that said SS was the gas cap. Well, actually, the guy selling it said "Its a SS" like a million times.
I bought it assuming it was a standard.

But now I have a few years work into the car and the final paint and exterior choices are coming fast and I dont wanna miss out on something big.

Thanks for any info and your time...
See sig for pics if it would help.

Sure doesn't sound like RS trim was ever part of it's past life.
Time to start checking fuel line size, power brakes, etc... to see if it was struck with the SS stick during it's prodution.
List some of the major trim and power train features and let some start taking a crack at identifying things for you.

Brrrr its cold out there...
The fuel line in the engine comp is 3/8th outer dim.
No power brakes or power steering.
Body trim was bare bones minimal when purchased. Either removed or never there.
Only evidence of trim is inside wheel well lips and side rocker panel between wheels. There was at one time screws in these locations.

Page two has pics of the "original" motor at time of purchase. This motor wasnt part of the deal and I never thought to get numbers off the block. Might be a piece of info in that pic, dont know.

Thanks again.

Real early 68 car.
Could you re-check the trim tag? Normally the top line is the date, like 09A or such. And the paint is listed on the tag as Z-Z for sure?
If so, what color was the original paint that you found in the door jambs, etc?

Let's make sure the axle is original. If so, then it's doubtful it's a SS or Z. The axle code is located on the passenger side axle tube. Look under 'Decoding' on the CRG website for a great sketch of the location. http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#RearAxleNumbers

I'd paint it any color, just make it look different and don't put Z stripes on it! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Sorry.
You are correct. 03C is the correct body tag info top right.

The paint code is ZZ.

When sanding off three layers of paint the last coat was a green. The down side is the coat on top of that was a brown (eww) No primer between the two coats. By the time I removed the brown I never really got a good look at the original green. I guess its British Racing and may paint it back to that factory color.
Looking at some of the produstion numbers British racing was heavily produced but I dont see many running around. Makes me lean toward it.

I figured it out. It's not an early car, I assumed the missing digit of the VIN was a 3, but it's 400153. Duh on my part.

Yup, BRG is a nice color!

I got to see pictures of a British Green car not too long ago. Very nice color and much better looking than I first imagined (visions of glossy olive drab...).

Impzilla you are right that you do not see many British Green cars around. My car is also coded ZZ. Makes me wish it really needed a paint job because I'm itching to go back to original! Maybe someday!

The 10 bolt axle code is
BP 0312
So it looks like this car is a plain ol V8 coupe.
Which is fine, thats what I figured I was buying.
