View Full Version : 396 or 402?
bob67 May 14th, 01, 04:43 AM Hi...i posted these #'s last week and was told it was from a '69 Impala or Caprice. I'm still a little confused about this block...Here's the info:
3955272 T
T1230JQ 19D037294
CONV2
GM5 B
HIPERF PASS K
L27? the ? looks like it may have been messed with or just a bad casting #...it could be a 0, 2 or something/nothing. The guy thinks its a 402 and it has a 4.125 bore, but it may just be a 396 bored out. Can you please tell me what size motor and year you think this is??? i would like to buy it tomorrow but i just want to know what it is...Thanks for your help.
orgsretep May 14th, 01, 05:04 AM Block 3955272 was used in 1969 for several applications. Engine suffix JQ in 1969 was used in a passenger car (caprice or impala) with 396 265HP turbo 400 2bbl. Do you think the last number on the date code could be an 8? That would make the date of the block Dec 27, 1968 which would jive with the other numbers. I don't think 402's were used until 1970, so this engine may have been bored if it measured 402.
bob67 May 14th, 01, 05:20 AM yes, it could possibly be an 8...i looked at it very closely and there is really no way of telling what it is, so an 8 is possible...is the appropriate casting number sequence for that year and block, L278, i mean is the year only one character? is there anything else that may distinguish this from a real 402? one last question if i may, can this block be safeley bored out another .030? Thank you all very much for your responses, they have been extremely helpful http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
bob67 May 14th, 01, 06:23 AM Since this block has a 'T' cast into near the block casting #, it came from Tonawanda, NY...in Chevy By The Numbers, it states it should have a 2 digit year date code??? any ideas?
Mark C May 14th, 01, 06:47 AM 402s will have a three letter engine suffix code. Yours has a 2 letter code (JQ) indicating it was used in a 69 model year vehicle. Looks like the block was cast on 12/27/1968, (L278) assembled on 12/30/1968 at the Tonowanda engine plant (T1230)and placed in a car assembled in the Doraville, Georgia GM assembly plant (from the VIN 19Dxxxxxx)probably in early January 1969. Don't know what they used to make but they make minivans now, Silhouette, Opel Sintra, Trans Sport, and Venture.

elcamino May 14th, 01, 01:58 PM In 1969 Doraville, GA plant was producing big cars (Impala, Caprice etc).
Its a 396, all 402's had 3 letter suffixs that started with a 'C' in the cars and a 'T' in the trucks.
bob67 May 15th, 01, 03:30 AM Thanks for all of your help guys. I'm gonna buy it tomorrow http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif and head straight for the machine shop.
