I have no engine for my 1968 SSRS Camaro. I have a 12 bolt differential, turbo 400 automatic, with air conditioning, serial # 124378N361989. I was told it was a 396 car. How can I verify this?

If your car was built in Canada you can get authentication from GM of Canada. I think you send in your vin and they match it with a build sheet.

If the car was built in the US (which it appears to be- Norwood Ohio from the "N" in the vin) then you will have to rely on the physical configuration of the car (eg heater core position on the firewall, springs/ rear, #s matching transmission) or owner history/ POP/ build sheet found in the car to verify.

No first gen Camaros were built in Canada. The ones that were sold in Canada, GM Canada will have the info. It is worth a try to check and see if GM Canada has the info.

Call the GM Canada Customer Communications Centre at 800.263.3777 (toll-free within Canada) and ask for Vintage Vehicle Services (VVS). Direct contact information for VVS is below. For a nominal fee ($45CDN as of Nov 1999) you will receive basic information from the original computerized records such as the option by RPO number, date of shipment, and the Canadian dealer number.

If the VIN on the transmission matches the dash, it was originally a 396. Only 396 came with TH400.
