Everyone has a story.. here is mine. Just purchased a 69 Camaro z28 RS, and have located the block number not original block but been told its from a 68 Camaro please advise--been told the tranny, rear end, and all the rest is original please assist.
VIN#124379N612014
Cowl ST69 12437NOR 788028DY TR712 69 69 pnt
02D X-33
Block# 3914678MO
Heads date code J8
Crank 1172
It has custom interior with a 8000 rpm tach
It is a beauty and I love it but would like some help with the paticulars. Further I will provide the tranny and rear end numbers if someone could help me find the location of them. (Note the frame has been powder coated) Thanks in advance. Glad to have found such a knowledgeable group.

Welcome 69x28. Sounds like a nice ride there. The axle code is on passenger side about half way between wheel and differential, facing the front. Probably covered with dirt and paint so some light sanding might be required. In my signature is link to my photos, an axle shot is in there so you can see what it looks like. Im not sure about the tranny, automatics are on the pan edge, passenger side again.
Check out www.camaros.org (http://www.camaros.org) for great information about location of numbers and their meaning. Many of those guys also read posts in here.
good luck

It looks like that's the original 302, 2-bolt engine. But I think it should be DZ, not MO. Not sure. Look for a stamped set of numbers/letters on a pad near the oil filter. The last half of the cars VIN should match those numbers. The car was built Feb, '69, the heads are Oct. '68.

hwystarjoe,
it is a 68 Z motor in a 69 car, The MO is correct for 68. Too early (68) for oil filter VIN stamping.

Great car.

The number referenced above is a casting number, not an engine assembly code. Although the casting does equate to a 68 2 bolt main 302 block.

Is the MO actually cast into the block? What is stamped on the engine pad infront of the passenger side head.

Whats the casting date behind the passenger head (opposite the engine casting number)?

The trans code is on the passenger side, stamped on the rear edge of the maincase. VIN may be stamped next to it.

The axle code is located on the passenger side axle tube. Look under 'Decoding' on the CRG website for a great sketch of the location. http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#RearAxleNumbers
