Hi,

I am needing help on to decode a Camaro RS.
He said it is a 69, but this is what it reads, on the firewall.
Vin #124378n594904.

I know its sounds like a 68, just needing more info.

Thanks

Tom

The first have is a 68 vin#, the second half is a 69 vin#. Does it have a trim tag on the firewall?

If thats the VIN from the dash then someone misread it because it has a 68 prefix (124378) with a set of 69 last six digits. 68 camaros had the last 6 digits of the VIN between 300000 and roughly 450000. 69 model year started at 500000 and ended around 729000.

Last 6 digits indicate its a March built 1969 Camaro. First 6 indicate its a 68 V8 coupe. Suspect it should be 124379N594904.

Well, here's the deal. The car has a missing
VIN # on the car. He was trying to get all
of the info he can on the firewall.
Can you help me out on other places to look
so i can decipher this thing.?

Thanks

Tom

There are 2 places on the car where a partial vin is stamped:

I copied this from http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#PartialVIN because this is a very good description of the location. So check the CRG page out.

1: On the cowl in front of the passenger side (underneath the cowl vent piece). You can see it sometimes if you carefully look with a flashlight through the slots in the vent panel, but the panel comes off with a few screws and the wiper arms pop off pretty easily, so this one is not a big deal to get to. The linked photo of the top of a firewall with the cowl grille removed shows a typical location for this stamp.

2: On the firewall underneath the fan motor. This requires heater box removal, and therefore most car buyers will not have an opportunity to view this one. The linked photo of the passenger side of a firewall with the heater box removed shows a typical location for this stamp.

The format of the partial VIN is:

1967-1969 Camaro Partial VIN Interpretation
yaxxxxxx (1967)
1yaxxxxxx (1968-69)

where
1 = Chevrolet
y = 7 for 1967 model,
8 for 1968 model, or
9 for 1969 model
a = N for Norwood assembly, or
L for Los Angeles assembly
xxxxxx = serial number sequence
