Ok, so its not a camaro, but the principle is the same...I am going to replace the bent subframe on my 78 nova (already have a replacement) but not sure how to support the car to do this...there isnt much to lift on under there? The engine, tranny, steering box, brake lines, fuel line, etc is all removed...just need to unbolt the old one and bolt in the replacement. How do I support the car? Thanks

travis,

i use jack stand's with a 2X4 with a grove cut in it to fit the body seam in the front, and just put some under the axle in the back.

i also make some mesurment's from fixed point's on the subframe and the rear axle to square it up when i put the new one in. use a X patern so you get it square

to lower the sub frame i use 2 floor jack's one on each side with a buddy helping.

all you need is about 2 feet of room onder the car to do this.

a rod shop by me uses a custom made dolly with 4 bottle jack's on it to move sub frame's in and out with..you could make one out of wood and some caster's but it is alot of work for one job but man is it easy this way.

when i do the sub frame on my 67 camaro i am makeing a dolly, this way i can work on it and move it around. but you are swaping so i bet you do not need one.

just be carefull and do not get stuck onder the car dude! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

I removed the subframe on my 67 all by myself with one floor jack.
Put the car up on jackstands as tall as they will go. I use the truck size jack stands not the ones made for imports.
Put the rear jackstands under the rear axle.
I used a piece of 4x4 across the car just inside the frame rails in the transmission area supported by the two jackstands.
Supporting by the outer seam under the doors is good too.
This allows you to remove the subframe forward without anything in the way.
Let the car down on the front support but keep pressure on the subframe. Have the jack on the rear of the subframe crossmember near the steering linkage. If the suspension is on it you will not need it so far back.
With no suspension on, I could steady it by using one hand pushing down on the front frame horn.
Remove the subframe bolts and all brackets, ground straps, emergency brake cable, brake lines, bumper brackets, etc.
Slowly lower the subframe and move it to the rear to clear the frame horns in front.

I was looking at supporting the car under the door seams...wasnt sure if they had enough beef to support the weight though. I think with a floor jack or jack stand under each sides seam that would give me enough room to do the job. I thought I could move the subframe around with my cherry picker...the sucker is just too ackward to make fine adjustments that way...so I think I will just leave the front x-member and suspension on the subframe, add some wheels, and by supporting it on the trans x-memeber with a floor jack it shouldnt be too bad. It sounds ok on paper anyway. Thanks for the responses guys.
