My car has the early type body tag..My question is on the early body tags what number or letter signified ss, rs or Z28..Or is it just impossible to tell...I know the later body tags you can tell by the X- codes, But what about the early tags how do you tell the difference. Does this mean I can make the car a ss rs or z28 and still be orginal by the tag? Please help ...Thanks....one more question why does this tag not have very much information...even 1968 and 67 had more information?

Only Fisher Body can answer that but its probably related to the change in body style and assembly plant operations at GM.

The only way Ive heard to be 100% positive of a cars options is having the build sheet, dealer invoice, window sticker, POP etc.
Also possible someone owned their car since 1969 and might sign some statement but who has seen that lately?
Maybe the more experienced members here can expand on this since its common for folks to 'presume' that an X this or X that means something when in reality it doesnt.
Sure wish GM has done better paper work and kept copies.

care to post all the vin and trim tag info?
it will never be an original RS,SS or Z.
Yes, it can be a clone, even a correct clone, although it costs as much or more than a real one to clone "correctly".it could even be sold as such for a profit, "but beware, in some states if you commit fraud, the buyer can recoup 3 times the damage" better to call a clone a clone and live right. maybe your numbers are already in a data base?
build the car anyway you want and let the car stand on it's own merit. buyer beware!
Sorry, not saying that is your intent, but in the past couple days I have called around trying to locate original parts, and there is a big market for guys building "Z's".
like we all know there are twice as many Z's out there now than in 69.
sorry to preach,

If I put this car a ss or rs would it be considered a clone...even though it could have been orginally? Im positive it wasnt a z or rs though... Let me know what you think.

68 trim tags suck, too.
We all throw away paperwork that 30 years from now, someone may wish we had kept. GM did the same thing. They had systems to help them build cars, not to document them 30 years later.

If you kept a warranty card for 30 years, for a toaster with a 1 year warranty, many would consider you "anal retentive."

GM was not anal retentive (although some might say GM Canada must have been...which is good news for anyone with a Canadian delivered Camaro.)

I have an early 69 SS Camaro w/o x code. Fortunately I have the POP indicating L-78 option. I contacted the original owner and, as someone already stated, I had him sign a statement indicating which options the car came with; am-fm, 4 speed, guages etc.. About a month before I contacted him he said he just threw out a large file with all the paperwork for the car (just my luck).See if you can do a MV title search and locate the original owner. The chances are slim , but you never know.

There arother ways to help point you to what it might have been originally. #'s matching? engine, trans.? 10 or 12 bolt rear end? dual exhaust? exhaust hangar bracket on frame rail? heater box-big or small? disc brakes on front? trunk lid spring bars-same size or 2 differnt sizes(indicates spoiler)? 2 fuel lines or 1? possible X code behind rear seat on bulkhead support? (abbreviated ie X 3 for X33)? you should get
