'68's are the hardest year to document. There is nothing on the cowl tag to tell if it is an SS. Pretty much the only way other than finding a build sheet, is to have the original engine, as the 350 and 396 engines were only available with the SS package. There were no 327 or 6-cyl SS cars. One thing seperates SS cars from regular cars...SS had 12 bolt rearends with multi-leaf rear springs, while regular cars had 10 bolts and a single leaf spring on each side. Hoods used on the SS had a raised portion in the middle with grates similar to Novas, except the 396 cars had the '69 style eight-stack grates. Drum brakes were still standard in '68, but SS cars had finned drums.

Dave,

Aren't the Chrome louvers on the hood the same for small and big block??? They have four squares in each. I had a guy swear that I had a big block hood on my 69 RS/SS 350. My car is original.I believe big and small block SS had the same louvers, at least in 68-69.

i was told that all ss had the wide chrome at the top of the door & that they had sway bars up front.i can't take apart someone else's car to maybe find a build sheet, there must be another way! thanks muchly,

68 small blocks SS's had the hood louvers with the straight lines in them. 68 big block SS's and all 69 SS's had the chrome louvers with the the squares in them. Except of course the cars that were ordered with the cowl induction hood.
The wide chrome strip is part of a trim package. It has nothing to do with the SS.
I used to have a 6 cylinder 68 that had that trim.
Ron.

Exactly right, Ron. 68 is an odd year. Like I said, without the original matching numbers engine, theres not much else to document a '68.
