Need some opinions on the engine in my 69.
The casting number on the back of the block by the bellhousing is 20GM 3970010. The VIN on the front of the block is missing. I believe the block may have been decked at some point in it's life.
The head casting is 3782461 L155 GM15. They are double hump heads.
Can anyone verify if this is indeed a 327? Or is it a 350?
Can you tell if it is 2-bolt or 4-bolt by looking at he numbers?
Can you tell if the heads could possibly be heads that would have come on either a 327 or 350? In other words, are these heads more likely to have come on a 327 or a 350?
I was told the engine is a 327. It has an Edelbrock performer cam, Performer RPM manifold, Holley 4165 (or 4175, not positive) 600cfm double pumper, roller rockers, headers, B&M T-350, 12-bolt posi. with 3:55 gears.
What are your thoughts on this combo?
Man, I'm full of questions today. (Among other things, too I've been told.)
Any help would be appreciated.

Rick,
I checked the numbers on MORTEC's website and this is what I came up with.... http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm
Engine:
3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4
Heads:
3782461....64-66...327......Camel hump,no accessory holes,160/62cc port volumes,62cc chamber
You can't tell whether it's a 2 or 4-bolt block by looking at anything other than actually dropping the oil pan and verifying the main caps. If those heads and block came together originally, I'd say it's a 327. The heads have tiny chambers at 62cc so if they or the engine deck were milled, they'd be SUPER small.

Thank you very much, Joe!
Sorry I didn't respond earlier.
I'm thinking along the same lines as you. I believe(think) the heads that are on this engine came on this engine so I 'm reasonably confident it is a 327. I'm pretty sure the block has been decked and that is why the numbers are missing from the pad. There are definite machining marks on the pad. Are there any other numbers on the block besides the ones we've talked about that may help me out in identifying it? Aren't there supposed some numbers stamped on a flange near the oil filter?
By the way, this site has BY FAR, the most informative and helpful folks on it of any I have encountered!
Thanks, again!

The heads were cast in December, 1965, so they didn't come on a 1969-and-later block; those are pretty decent 327 heads.

Yer right John! And they were cast on my birthday! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
You've got the numbers you need for the block Rick. Those heads definitely didn't come on that block from the factory. I'm trying to think of the easiest way to find out whether it's a 327 or 350, without measuring journal sizes. If the pad hadn't been milled off, it would be easier.
If it's a 327, you've got a real nice combo there! You can do a lot with it. Do a search in the Performance or Engine & Drivetrain forums and you'll find alot of people with 327's that perform VERY well with little work.

Thanks a ton to both of you.
Yeah, I'm actually pretty happy with it the way it is. I bought this car last July from a father who was selling it for his son who had gone off to college. He was really not too sure what he had, but from the outside pieces on the engine it looked like he at least had it headed in the right direction. Actually it's a pretty strong runner as it sits.
Thanks again to you both.
