View Full Version : Engine block decode

Took the valve covers off my car today and found I have a set of 3890462 heads which I was very happy to see. Also on the 3890462 heads was a smaller number D187. What does this number tell us?

I then got to wondering what my block is. Block casting is a 3970010. Numbers off the front pad read C5U114394 V1106TYU.

Thanks!

D187 is a casting date
D-April
18th
19?7

You have a Chevy truck engine with swapped heads, apparently.

C5U114394 is the VIN derivative and tells what year it was used, the assembly plant and what type vehicle
C = Chevy Truck
5 = Model year 1975
U = Assembly plant code designator for Lordstown, Ohio
114394 = the sequence number for the truck, last 6 of VIN. 14,394 unit built, early.

V1106TYU is the engine application code

V - Flint Engine Plant
11 - Nov built
06 - Day of month
TYU - 1975 truck 350-160 HP with manual trans, 4-bbl carb, RPO LS9, used in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks

fyi-a T or A in the engine suffix code (TYU) designates a truck engine (always) , a C or Z would be for a passenger car (always).

Would this be a 4 bolt main block then? Since the block was originally in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck I would tend to think it would be, but I'm not going to pull the pan to find out... YET!

Thanks!

Lordstown built only full-size Chevy and GMC vans.
