Looking at a 69 SS 396. Vin matches the block but the cowl tag shows R237 where I expect to see X66. What gives??

That number is a Los Angeles internal sequencing code. Esentially it means the car was the 237th car built during the R build period. A build period is roughly one day of production.

Would expect a build date in the 4th week of the month the car was built in such as 02D.

Los Angeles cars don't use X codes.

I'd be interested in seeing the #'s off of the car if you have them (VIN and cowl tag). We can make sure they match.

Where's the VIN stamped on the block and what is the engine code?
Correct trans and rearend?

Actually, the R237 could fall within several build windows. Why do you think it is an 02D car, Mark?
