Please bear with me, I kinda new here. I've recently purchased a '69 Camaro which is supposed to be a 350SS. I've been reading the other posts and I'm still puzzled over a couple of things. The cowl tag reads:
ST 69 12437 NOR 107678 BDY
TR 721 5959 PNT
09A X44
The VIN is 123379N680179
The number on the block is: V0316TJA
What really concerns me is the VIN is 12337
and the cowl tag is 12437......
I have looked this engine number up and cannot find it anywhere. I am guessing unlike Chevelles, which older ones determined a SS in the VIN, a Camaro is different??Any help would be appreciated.

Don't compare the 12337 (vin) and the 12437 (cowl) numbers to each other. They have no relation to each other and have different meanings. With the vin starting with 12337 shows that the car is a original six cyl car. X44 can't be a SS also. Either X22, X66, or nothing could be SS, but not X44. Its not a SS but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it anyway. Have fun and welcome!

First of all...welcome to the best site on the net...
I concur with the others...base 6 cylinder car. It's a fairly late car also...what condition is it in? Original color? What type of drivetrain is in the car now?

VO321TJA is a truck block with two options:
1. 1973 - 350/175hp and 4B carb
2. 1974 - 350/155hp with 4B carb and manual trans.
VO316TJA:
V = Flint assembly plant
0316 = March 16, 1973 or 74 assembly date
TJA = Block code as above two options
Check the casting dates on the block. This will tell you whether or not it was '73 or '74.
This may be a good block to build a new engine. I don't know if this is a 4 bolt main, but a lot of truck blocks were.

Thanks for the help. However I can assume that someone changed the cowl tag if it reads 12437 which I thought meant V8 with a VIN that starts 12337. Is this a correct assumption??

No, re-read my post. Do not compare the first five digits of the vin to the 12437 on the cowl tag. EVERY SINGLE 69 Camaro had 12437 on the cowl tag no matter if it was a six cyl or a 427. Its like comparing a bumper to a tire, no relation. For more clues and information I suggest you visit www.camaros.org (http://www.camaros.org) You will find endless info there that will amaze you and keep you busy for hours. Enjoy!
