Im not overly knowledgeable on 69's but arent 69Z's supposed to have an X code on the cowl tag. (33 or 66 i believe) Maybe this ones build date was to early for that (10A), sure someone more knowledgeable on 69's will chime in.

Im new to this but dont see where the Z28 is on the tag. Im using John Hoopers Camaro Recognition Guide

this auction is on my watch list, this is what I have decoded

8 cylinder coupe
black houndstooth
Hugger Orange

What am I missing or doing wrong?? Im trying to learn to decode cars, and parts.

This was discussed in another thread (can't find it now) it is a pre X-code, with a good chance at being a real RS Z, but without the engine, tough to prove.

I believe Z's came with a X-33 (style trim with special performance package) or X77 (base car with special performance package) I think that the X33 was your RS Z28 and the X77 was standard trim. If I'm incorrect the wonderful minds here at TC will come thru!!

Cant really tell anything about it being a real Z from the early trim tag.

But what I question is the outline from the 302 emblem on the "original" hood. From what I know, the cowl hood wasnt available until the end of November. This car is two months early for it.

Hood can't be original. Emblems don't mean much. Do you realize how many plain jane camaros got Z/28 emblems in the 70's? States it has the original posi rear, but does not state ratio or stamped code. If it is a BU coded rear (3.73), dated Aug or Sept 68 with correct four leaf rear springs, that would be at least evidence it is a Z, but not proof positive.

Wrong rear bumper guards. Why would someone swap out the correct ones for the little bumperettes?

Just a couple of things to think about.

Here it is

http://www.camaros.net/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/2/10680.html?

Not much help though

Deluxe interior is mostly gone, but the door handle mech on the driver side is still there plus the wood grain on the pass dash is still there too.

Nice color combo and with the muncie speedo hole, it should be at least an SS/RS (if backup lights are orig) at best a Z/RS like it is advertised. smile.gif

But a lot of work and missing a bunch of expensive parts.

Luck!

I posted about this car "The etched paint theory" I was told by the owner it was a real Z because the paint was etched on the cowl hood..however the car was built too early to have a cowl hood from the factory...if it at least had the UH Radiator or the 660 Trans with the VIN then OK..otherwise it could be an SS 350 too or who knows what...after 35 years anything could have happened to that car..I wish I had a penny for every 69 Z/28 emblem sold and put on a Camaro that wasn't a Z/28.
