: HAS ANYONE SEEN A VAN NUYS MISSING THE PARTIAL VIN ON THE BLOCK?

HI,

I'm a new member.... I have a late 68 Van Nuys. It's a 69 but just made in late 68. It's all matching numbers... except I can't seem to find a partial VIN on the block?! I don't know what to do.... BUT I'm almost positive that it's the original block because... I have paperwork from 69 that has the engine number... { DATE ETC.... } and it matches the number on the block. The block also has an I in the code? YES an I not an 1. I also question this? Is that possibly correct? I have been told that in SOME cases that I could mean a 1. I'm not sure though. But i have the REPLACEMENT protect-o-plate.... dated in 1969 so the owner must have lost the original one and got a replacement? Oil stickers from 1970 on.... up to 92,000 miles. I have tons of documentation on this car... but I still have my wonders about these numbers. Also does anyone have A REALLY REALLY GREAT way to detect putty? I think it may have a little bit in the lower quarter panels. I have tried a magnet on it... and it semi- sticks. But I was thinking that it may not have stuck as well because of what is behind it or just the fact of the curve. BUT I'M NOT CERTAIN. Well.... I will keep in touch... and keep you all updated! PLEASE if you have any information.... Respond! Thank you all!

I too have an early 69Z 10E build date on cowl plate. VI018DZ (I instead of a 1) on the machine area at the front of the block. All the early build 69 cars have the VIN stamped vertically at the oil filter area in the rough casting. It's tough to tell you exactly where its at but its the vertical cast flnge at the filter area. My partial vin read 19L506XXX at the filter and I had to take finger nail polish to get the paint off first and then took a chalk stick to it and could barely read them. If you'd like I can send you a Video clip of the area if it's tough to find for you.

Those numbers i found... 6 of them 2 rows of 3... the bottom row is in my VIN but not quite in the corrct order. I'm not sure what to do from here? O and those numbers I found were VERY clear but in a hard to get to place. I'm still searching.....

thanks everyone!

p.s. any help given is HUGE help.... and TODDZ thank you for fixing my problem with the I. O and one last thing... i have the window sticker as.. well does that help? It has the Vin on it... but is there anything else i can use from it? THANKS AGAIN!

Try wire brushing the area to clean out any old dirt, oil and paint. Then you can spray it with white spray paint and wipe it off before it dries. The white paint should stay in the stamped numbers and you'll be able to read it. The chalk idea should work too. The "I" is interchanged with "1" quite often so don't worry about that. What are the codes and dates off the engine? What are the codes on the protect-o-plate? What does your cowl tag read? What is your VIN #? I'm just asking these questions to try and help, so if you don't want to post you VIN, that's up to you. If it's a replacement protect-o-plate, it often doesn't have the engine, trans or rear codes in it. That could also mean someone owned the car for a short time in 69, then the second owner paid for the extended warranty which resulted in a second protect-o-plate being issued. Do you see "5" or "50" anywhere on your protect-o-plate?

I have a few cars in the registry with an "I" on the block deck in place of a "1". Could the "1" die have been broken? Strange.

69Z28RS - I just sent you an E-mail regarding your car's data.....I'd like to get the numbers...

My 11B car has VI023HA stamped on it with the partial VIN on the front pad also. I thought that the factory started stamping the VIN back by the oil filter in early 69. I have a May 1970 Z28 block with the VIN stamped by the oil filter area. Never knew the early 69 cars had them stamped back there.

Forget the exact date, but somewhere around 2nd week of Dec '68, the VIN stamping was switched to the oil filter location. Later on the Van Nuys plant went back to the alternator pad location, but the Norwood plant kept it by the oil filter.

Thank you all! But i just can't seem to find those numbers by the oil filter? Where in the general area should i be looking? Is there a pad? Or what? I'm not sure as to where i'm looking... but earlier today i was under it... with my garage up.. and a light... and i had no luck. I don't know where to go from here... sooner or later i plan on posting my VIN, COWL, ETC.... but not yet.. i would like to know for sure it's what i think it is. SORRY! Well... i'm going to go get my p.o.p. and my documentation... be right back! Ok sorry ya all...hum... AND YES... to whom ever asked (i can't really remember!) my P.o.P has both a 5 as well as a 50. What does that mean? Um... i'm not sure bout what that has to do with anything? But anyhow... it was replaced 10-9-69... and doesn't have any of the engine numbers or any of that. OK... well i am still searching my docs.... ok well looking through them... i have come across the thing that continuously makes me think this is a number matching car.... these invoices.. from 1969... from a certified GM dealer... for factory service. It has the engine code RIGHT on the top of it! It makes me think day in and day out this car is original! Well the only thing is that the invoice in stead of an I in the engine code it has a 1. Which i'm still debating could be a good or bad thing? OK well THANKS! I'm still hunting!!!

CYA THANKS!

Sounds like you've got a #'s matching engine. The 5 & 50 on the 2nd issue protect-o-plate is for the extended 5 year 50K mile warranty I believe. I've seen another 69 Z28 with it and spoke to the 2nd owner who verified he got the extended warranty. If you have copies of invoices with work done and it has the engine code imprinted on it, that impression most likely came from the original p-o-p when warranty work was done. As far as the location of the VIN, it should be on the rough cast area on the driver's side down by the oil filter pad and it runs vertically up and down close to the bellhousing. The VIN should be stamped from top to bottom on that pad. That rough cast pad area faces toward the driver's fender. It should begin with 19L...... with the 6 digits of your vin. It helps to hold a light at an angle to look for the stamping. But, I've seen a Norwood car with the 19N and then nothing after it. It was a DZ block too.

OOPS! You know what i did last night is i musy have been so caught up in this that i thought i had a NORWOOD engine! ( OOPS! ) When in fact i have a FYLNT, MICHIGAN engine!i don't know what i was thinking but PLEASE excuse any of my misleading information there. I'm extremely SORRY! This time i do have the correct information. But was the gentlemen's car a NORWOOD engine ( by some miracle ) whenever he had the N and then those numbers? Well i'm sorry for all of the confusion...... THANKS AGAIN YOU ALL!

THANKS!

Is your car a Norwood car or a Van Nuys car? The Van Nuys would have the L in the VIN and the Norwood would have an N in the VIN. Your engine should have the same letter as your VIN. Again, look for either a "19L123456" or "19N123456".

69Z, Hi and WELCOME to 1 of the 2 best sites on the Internet. I see that you are OVERJOYED with your Z-28 and you have every right to be, it sounds like you have a great car. A little advise if you don't mind. When you sit down at the computer to post here on Team Camaro, take a deep breath before you post and turn the caps off and try to do a better job of puctuating and eliminating the run-on sentences. Thanks. You will find a plethora of info here on this site and everyone will do their best to give you the help you ask for when you post. ENJOY!!!!

On the subject of the I and the 1. Some of the old die sets used the I as a 1. we once had a set at work that was from back in the 60's and it had the letters of the alphabet and the numners 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, turn the 6 upside down for the nine and use the I as a 1. Very common thing to do back then.

Ok,

Now what about this N thing? I don't remember who it was but they said something about an N instead of a partial VIN? Was that for an LA car? Just wondering. Well thanks again!

Forget the N....your car should have a partial vin like 19L5xxxxx.

The N is for Norwood cars. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

Hi,

Another quick question. I have small sprayers above the headlights. Should they be there? Are they an option? Are they standard? Should they be on the window sticker?

thanks once again!

did my annual oil change today. my car is a 12C la car and i thought the block had been decked because i couldn't make out the vin on the front pad. gave the oil filter pad a look and sure enough there was a 13726 to match my vin of 12376L513726. makes me feel better about the car since the fellow who sold it to me had lied about a lot of the other stuff (air just needs freon, brakes only need rear pads, etc.)
secndgn, posted this pic on another post:
"Sometimes a picture helps http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=867100&a=6307608&p=27289734&Sequence=0
If the number was stamped in the oil filter area it will be on the vertical part of the engine bell housing mount."
it really helped out. i wasn't exactly sure where to look before i saw the pic.
