Ok here we go.

Just looked at a car tonite that is a Van Nuys built car so no X codes. It did however have the Z/28 on the rear panel. The guy has owned this car since 1976. He bought it from a dealer that stated it was a Z/28. Well he found out years later when he had the engine rebuilt that it had a 283 in it. Anyway the car is Cortez silver with black stripes. No spoilers or cowl hood. But it does have an M22 with 12 bolt posi and feels like a 4.11. It does have power disks and a 6k-7k tach. Console guages were taken out years ago. It has the 4 leafs and looks to have been in there forever. I did not see a return line on the fuel system. I did however forgot to check the position of the speedo cable. Car has rust in the quarter lips which is easy to save. What do you think? It could be?

sounds like the car has some of the correct Z options.The single fuel line would be correct,disc brakes,4 leaf springs ect.Here are some other things to look for.
Deep groove pulleys,2 piece throttle rod(front section is bent).Tail pipe adapter plate on the L.H. frame by the rear shocks(SS,Z-28 and COPO had them)On the early Z-28'S the spoilers were an option so the no rear spoiler is possible.Most Z-28's had a 13/16 front sway bar.Most Z-28's had flat hoods.
If these things check out you could post the trans and rear end numbers and the decoding boys can check if they are original to the car.If the price is right it sounds like a nice car! Let us know what you find. Cary

I'm going over tomorrow to check out the numbers on the trans and rear end. I forgot about the exhaust adapter thanks.

If it's a Van nuys car, check on top of the gas tank for the broadcast sheet. It's usually glued to the front of the tank on the driver's side. Don't just try to pull it out because it will be fragile. You'll have to lower the tank to really get to it. That sheet should have a bunch of boxes and codes which will prove if it is a Z28.

This must be my lucky day! The VIN number that is on the M22 matches and this was not a 396/375 horse car since the heater core location looks factory small block, plus there is the exhaust adapter plate on the drivers side.

The VIN is 124379L517706
Trim:

ST 69 12437 VN238181 BDY

TR 715 69 69 PNT

01C L009

here is the VIN info

1=chevy
2=camaro
4=8 cylinder
37= coupe
9=1969
L= los angeles (van nuys) assembly plant
517706=unit sequence # this started at 50000
so this car was the 17,706th camaro built at the van nuys plant in 1969.

here is your trim tag info

69=1969
12437=camaro coupe
VN=Van Nuys assmbly plant
238181=fisher body # (no meaning)

715=dark blue standard bucket interior

69 69= cortez silver paint on upper and lower body, black Z stripes are correct

01C=build date of third week of January 1969

L009=Van Nuys work order code (no useful info)

dont have a book to for the exhaust manifold.

sounds like a nice car and very good chance it is a real Z.

FYI one other spot you can check for Z is the tire sticker. on 69s i believe this is located on the drivers door. wheels should be 15x7 rallys with an AD or YH code stamped into them near the valve stem hole

Silver with blue interior? Pretty cool, I'm sick of black interiors. No offense anyone, my interior is black. If the price is right I say scoff it up

http://www.camaros.net/forum/cool.gif And @ 2100 M-22's were installed in Camaros- Z's, 375's, ZL-1 and C.O.P.O. cars combined. I have one out of a Chevelle, dated ' 69 , of which 1276 were installed!

The # 043 manifold is a ' 71-74 model, and not correct for the car. The ones you need are # 527 LH, and # 826 RH.

Yes it is. I have other projects ahead of this one.
I found the chasis sheet above the gas tank but it torn up and real dirty. Does someone out there have a chasis sheet from a VanNuy's
Z/28? If so, I need to find out if EY or FY on the front springs section will give me a better clue.

Peace.

In the model box does it say Z28?
Also in the engine box just below does it say
DZ?
Thanks,
Monty

Yes, engine code is DZ for the Z28. Check with Kurt S at Camaros.net for what some of the other codes mean. My springs say YF, but I think there may be a couple of codes for the Z28's.

camaroguy,
Yes, my front springs are definately "YF".
Here are some other codes off my broadcast sheet, if it will help you.
line 1) (unreadable)
line 2) (unreadable)
line 3) air cl. 07, alt. CZ, (?) N, (?) OA
line 4) mast. cl. CU, alt. pulley DV, (?) BZ, (?) KG
line 5) (?) MN, (?) Q, (?) N, Disk Brake Back Plate AI, frt. springs YF, (?) D, Bat cables MF,BF
line 6) rear springs BM, rear shocks UN, radiator UH, rad. hose in. JR, out SM, lamp harness VX or VY (?), (?) A
line 7) wheel qty 5, size E70 15, type 4 NZ (?).
Note: the rest of my build sheet was unreadable. Also, instrument panel harness had a "BA" blue tag on it. Written in white chalk on shift tunnel under carpet was M-21. White paint was found under cowl area, (stripe color). Green paint inspection paint marks were found on front spindles. Partial VIN #'s stamped under cowl matched VIN on dash. It is a 02A, (1st week of Feb. 69), Van Nuys built car. Also, this car came with no cowl hood, no spoilers, (no hole drilled in front crossmember fro brace), no console, (no holes in shift tunnel, just dimples), and no tach/gauges.
Also, Kurt S.,
Could you tell me what the codes with a question mark are? Thanks.
