View Full Version : Any problems selling a car across borders?

Guys- I am sad to say, I am selling my 69 Z28 to a friend from Canada. Have any of you had any experience with a sell like this (across borders I mean, not giving up your Z!)?

I was thinking of driving the car over the border with my wife following in another car, making the deal, and then driving back over the border. Am I worried about nothing, or is there any buying/ selling hiccups I could be walking into? Would it be better to have my friend come across the border, and then drive the car back himself?

Thanks for any input!
Matt

Good question Matt! If any one else can shed some light on this it would be much appreciated.

Matt,

I've bought a couple of cars from the US and brought them into Canada - in fact, just bought one this past weekend smile.gif

You need to have your friend meet you on the US side and then have him in the car with you when you hit the border. Have a bill of sale ready and the title signed over to him. When you reach customs, they'll ask if you have anything to declare. Your buddy tells them "this car". They'll send you over to pay the GST and brokerage fees and he's on his way home! They may come out and inspect the car. No big deal at all for a '69 Z if you have all of the paperwork in order. You do not want to bring the car across the border without declaring it or your friend will have more trouble registering the car.

No problem Matt. If you have your buddy declare the car there will be no problems. I brought a BB Corvette across one evening at about 2 am and they didn't even come outside to look at it! Just paid the taxes and went on my way. There was just a bunch of summer students working and they couldn't have cared less smile.gif
