View Full Version : please help decoding
TSN100 Aug 1st, 01, 07:46 AM ok, here it is, I bought this car last year, and was too anxious to drive it to be concerned about numbers and originality.I only paid $4000.00 for the car, and for the year, the car seems to be in pretty good condition, the usual lower fender rust, and some surface rust around the lower edges of the rear window, straight quarters, with no obvious bondo. It is a 69 hugger orange with SS badges ,a 396 4speed with 12 bolt posi.Vin#124379L523668 engine#TO424JB cowl tag#'s are ST 69 12437 VN26988 BDY
TR 711 72 72 PNT

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Sorry for not being able to do the engine, and I am pretty sure that this is correct for everything else. Someone should be along shortly who is able to decode engines.
Sounds like a great car btw.
Sean
70 RS/Z-28 Aug 1st, 01, 04:26 PM Looks like the engine is a 396-325 HP from a '69 Camaro but is not original to your car. The engine assembely date is April 24th (0424) which is over two months after your car was built: O2B = 2nd week of Feb. 1969

Sean, please see http://www.camaros.net/forum/Forum6/HTML/001555.html. ALL 68-9 Camaros had 12467 or 12437 on the trim tag.

TSN100 Aug 1st, 01, 07:50 PM Sorry guys, my mistake. those numbers are T0124JB, also, I crawled underneath and could see the last 4 digits above the oil filter are 3667. also trans #'s are 3925660 P9A23A and 19L523667. where would the numbers be on the 12 bolt? If I'm reading it right your database shows JB as being an automatic.
Unreal Aug 2nd, 01, 04:55 AM Nope JB is 396/325 4 speed.
I wish I could find one like yours for 4 Grand! Congratulations. It appears you have a survivor.
Unreal Aug 2nd, 01, 05:01 AM The 3667 matches your VIN.
Rear end code is on front side of the pass side tube, about 1 foot out from the housing. No VIN there, but the code will tell you build date, and original gear. Look for a single letter (E) on the second line. That indicates posi unit.
Congrats again!
Mark C Aug 2nd, 01, 05:10 AM 3667 is one number off from the 3668 VIN originally posted. Is that a Typo or did GM install the transmission from the car ahead of yours in your car?

Kurt S Aug 2nd, 01, 05:15 AM Look under 'Decoding' on the CRG website for a great sketch of the axle code location.
Sounds good so far. But you say that the VIN on the engine and trans end in 3667. The VIN you posted for the car ends in 3668.
Also, could you repost the VN # on the trim tag? It should have 6 digits.

TSN100 Aug 2nd, 01, 06:35 AM I left the car at home, so i'll repost those #'s tonight. The guy i got it from said it had been stored in Az.in a garage for the past 15 yrs.I never gave it much thought, because of the asking price. interior is nice & complete, including the AM radio, and looks like original lighter. The only interior flaws are cracked steering wheel, worn carpet & buckled dash.and some threads in the visor letting go(old age)pulled the door panels to grease window crank & found no obvious bondo but did find 1 spot of light mud on both frnt fenders towards the front. changed the alternator but kept the original instead of turning it in for a core, should probably rebuild it & put back in. Also mostly orig. paint, just some repaint on spots on frnt fenders( still shiney but obviously old) What a find huh? Im guessing the build sheet is probably still with the car somewhere, but probably wont matter on value anyway, being a low HP BB without a lot of options, besides , I bought it to drive, not to make a buck! And so far the only thing I've done is rebuild the engine. Thanks again for all of your input.
Terry
KevinW Aug 2nd, 01, 09:39 AM Terry, post the alternator numbers too, we can verify whether it is original. Everything has a number that can be traced back to see if it is original.
Congrats on finding a great car!

KevinW Aug 2nd, 01, 02:10 PM Terry, Yup, that looks like the original alt. 834 was for the hyd cam 69 camaros without air. date code is right on. Get it rebuilt by Jerry MacNeish when you do a full restore.
Great car. Kevin

Kevin, How do I get ahold of Jerry Macneish?, I'll have it rebuilt right away. Also, should I keep the original fenders and repair the lower rust or replace em ? How does this affect the value? & is it THAT rare to have all original #'s? Didnt they build quite a few of these cars?
thanks, Terry
TSN100 Aug 2nd, 01, 03:30 PM almost forgot repost of trim tag vn 269688.I gotta replace this keybord.(sticking keys)
Again, I can't thank you guys enough.

KevinW Aug 3rd, 01, 07:45 AM Terry, Jerry is a very well respected Camaro Restorer, historian and all around great Camaro Guru. His site is www.z28camaro.com (http://www.z28camaro.com) He does a lot of component restoration for reasonable prices, I've had a lot of stuff done by him and have a lot more to do.
On how rare is your car, look at it this way. Of the 243,085 69' Camaros built only 13,659 were built with a 396 (all HP levels). That's only 5.6% of the total. Only 25% approx of total production were 4 speeds. If you take the total 396 production and apply the 25% (4 speed) to it you get roughly 3,414 cars were built with a 396 and a 4 speed.
Then you think about how many 396 camaros were blown up, crashed, converted to yenkos, etc.. and add to the fact your car has all the original components, your car is very rare. Add to that you stole it and I would be a very happy camper!
I would repair the fenders, get a GOOD body man to to an all steel fix. NOS is 2nd choice, but is expensive. You should repair/restore all the original components that you can and keep the ones you can't for the next guy. Even the bolts! (they are all marked with special marks)
Good Luck, take many before pictures! and keep it original!

TSN100 Aug 3rd, 01, 09:55 AM Kevin, I called Jerry & got the ball rolling, I'm really grateful for everyones input.Go figure, a complete original! I have no intention of altering the the car, but now a ground-up is in it's future.Right now it's probably a ragged B or good C condition.Good starting base!
thanks again all,
Terry
JohnZ Aug 3rd, 01, 10:50 AM Jerry did my alternator (and a lot of other parts) a month or so ago - alternator looks brand new, the new diodes are even dated for the car - SUPER work!

Kurt S Aug 5th, 01, 07:39 PM Terry,
If it is that original, I'd question restoring the car. It's only original once, it can be restored and repaint hundreds of times.
It's a Survivor. Personally, I'd keep it that way. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

TSN100 Aug 6th, 01, 07:02 AM Kurt, do you know of anyone in the Ontario,California area that I could take it to for an honest evaluation? Maybe you're right!odometer shows about 93,000, was 92,380 when I bought it, but after seeing all the attention it gets, I don't drive it as much anymore!Too afraid of having it wrecked, damaged in a parking lot,or even worse, stolen! Really is a blast to drive, would be a shame to mothball it! Even restored ,I would still want to drive it, fear factor and all.Guess i'm not a trailer queen kind of guy. Anyway, let me know, thanks, Terry
Kurt S Aug 6th, 01, 05:49 PM Only person I can think of in your area is Sal Perez, down by El Cajon area. I think his shop is American Musclecar Classics.
Easier way is go to a couple of the big Chevy shows with the car. You'll probably find some knowledgeable people there.
I drove thru Ontario, CA several months ago. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
