: 1968 Camaro pace car - Daytona 500
JOE58 Dec 17th, 99, 11:57 AM There was small article in Oct.99 Super Chevy about a SS/RS 396/350hp 1968 Camaro pace car. It was used at the 68 Daytona 500 and is signed by A.J. Foyt. R. Petty and many others. They state that it is 1 of 4 1968 Camaros convertables with AC, PW, tilt wheel, console, and gauges. Can that be accuate that only 4 were built with those options? It is too bad they didn't preserve the car better since it had all the driver's signatures.
70 RS/Z-28 Dec 18th, 99, 07:45 AM I remember seeing an article about that car a few years ago. I think it was in such bad shape the signatures couldn't be saved during a restoration. Perhaps the article meant there were only 4 pace cars?? The options listed were fairly common. I would bet there were several hundred camaros equipped as you specified. Currently there is no way to tell how many cars were built with different option combinations. Chevy only tracked the total number of a particular option sold not combinations of options. Best you can do is use statistics to get close to the number built.
Here's the number built for each option :
1968 Covertibles = 16,927
L34 396/350 = 2,579
C60 A/C = 35,886
A31 Power Windows = 3,304
N33 Tilt wheel = 5,294
D55 Center console = 140,530
U17 Guages = 20,263
Z22 Rally Sport = 40,977

elcamino72 Dec 18th, 99, 03:54 PM Yeah, I agree with 70RS/Z28, those options aren't that rare. I bet there were more than 4 cars built with those options.

Rich Fields Dec 19th, 99, 03:25 AM CRG has 6 cars logged that include that set of option combinations. 4 67s, no 68s, 2 69s. I wouldn't jump to conclusions about 68s because we have no 68s logged yet. For some reason, we have far fewer 68s in our database, relative to 67s and 69s. Also, while our database is large and growing fast, we still have only a small portion of the total population of cars built, and it isn't necessarily a uniform/even sample. I would be very surprised if there weren't quite a few cars built with this set of options.

Will or is the database acessible to the public at large (ie-me)?

Rich Fields Dec 22nd, 99, 08:11 AM The CRG database was created, and people have been submitting data to us, on the assumption that the data would be held confidential, within CRG. We cannot back-off from that promise.
This doesn't mean that we wouldn't ever consider releasing some "sanitized" version (obviously, with more limited abilities) that eliminated certain information (owner name and address, partial VINs, sensitive notes, possibly other info). But even a censored version would be a change in policy, and we wouldn't consider even this without contacting a substantial number of the people that have submitted their own data to see what their reaction would be.
Bottom line, at least for foreseeable future, is that you'll have to be content with seeing the results from the data, without seeing the data itself.

Hi Rich,I have a 68 camaro conv. with L34 350hp 396 a/c,TH400,ect..With 2579 L34 HP 396's made I don't think there were to many made with conv.and a/c.Also I didn't think chevrolet put the L34 in 67 Camaro's,did they?
CA420 Jan 31st, 01, 11:55 AM I have pictures of this car from the power tour and they did a bad job restoring it. The 396 emblem is not mounted correctly on the drivers' side fender.

Mike67RS Feb 1st, 01, 03:56 AM Rich, are those numbers you posted for convertibles only? I'm curious as I have all those options in coupe form.
Oops, my bad...didn't see the PW first time. Sorry!

Kurt S Feb 1st, 01, 11:00 AM That was convertibles.
Coupes with those options (AC, PW, tilt wheel, console, and gauges):
No 67's, 2 68's, and 3 69's.
Also realize that we have only partial data on several cars that may have this option combination, but we may not know all the options on the car. By it's nature, this database has shortcomings. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
