Can anyone identify this number, it's not in the book I have. Here goes. 3882388 or could be 3892388.

3932388 is a 1969 350/300hp 4 bolt. You see them used in Z11's and SS's

Thats a weird block number that does show up in random L48 SS cars, as well as some Z28s produced between November of 68 and early March of 69. No one seems to know why they were made or how they differed from the other three more well know 350/302 block castings.

Thanks for the lifeline fellas. This gives a little more credit to my 69 being a true 350 SS car. Kinda hard to believe that this could be the original block in the car after 32 years, but the possibility does exist.

Check the engine code stamp and find the partial VIN.

The 388 block was used anywhere the other 302/350 block castings were used. Including L48 (SS), Z28, and L65 (350/255hp). So just being a 388 block shows it is a 4" bore block (302 or 350). And that's all. It definitely not proof of a SS.

You need to get the engine code and find the partial VIN on the engine.

OK Kurt, you got me curious about the partial VIN. So here is what I found out. Complete VIN reads as follows: 124379N556100, stamped number on engine pad reads: 19N556100

So I probably need to dig a little further to verify the SS theory, but this looks somewhat promising. Whaddya think?

Right next to the partial VIN on the Engine pad behind the alternator is the engine ID code. A 350/300HP L48 SS will have a code ending with the letters HA, HB, or HE. The first two codes being much more common.

HA = 350/300HP with 4 spd Trans.
HB = 350/300HP with a TH350 Trans.
HE = 350/300HP with a Powerglide Trans.

I can almost make out what looks to be like an HB, but it is very lightly stamped, can't be for sure. damn it!

Sounds like it is the original engine.
How much of the engine code can you read? It should be like T1201HB. Try Scotchbrite to clean up the pad.

Were you able to find the axle code? The # is stamped on the upper front side of the passenger axle tube and will tell us the original ratio and build date. It may take some cleaning to find it. See the 'Decoding' section of www.camaros.org (http://www.camaros.org) for a great sketch of the location.

Let us know what you find.

Well I seem to have hit the wall on my quest. I am pretty sure the rearend has been changed. Here are the numbers: Code JAG1993 clearly stamped on the passenger forward facing axle tube, casting number is 1235542B with the letter N above it. As far as the block pad goes, I can make out the T and the 1 clearly now that I have cleaned it up, but the rest is too light to tell, other than the partial VIN. I do have the return fuel line. I'm out of ideas

It sounds like the block was decked at one time and that's why the engine code is partly gone. Drop me an email and I'll send you a procedure to use acid to help pull the #'s off of the block. It has worked in the past.
Hopefully you'll have proof what the car is. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif Auto or manual?
