: DZ engine VIN number stamping question

Hello all,
I read most of the books that depicts where the dz numbers should be stamped on a 302 block. My question is regarding the vin numbers location. I have read early models were stamped by the DZ code and later stamped by the oil filter. Is this the ONLY 2 locations for the vin number? A buddy of mine said that Jerry Macneish's book claims otherwise. I can't find it in my definitive 69 book. Is this true?
thanks
Kelvin

Vin derivatives were only stamped on the front pad, or on the rear side of the block above the oil filter in Camaros. Where they got stamped depended on which assembly plant (LA or Norwood) put them in the car, and when the car was built. LA started and ended production with the stamp on the front pad, but put it above the oil filter mid year. Norwood started production with it on the front pad, but shifted to the oil filter area mid year (after LA did it) and it stayed there for the rest of production.

Kelvin,
I've never heard of a VIN # stamped anywhere other than the two places you described.
As far as the location timing of the VIN stampings I can give you three originals that I have personally seen. On my 02C LA Z/28 car, the LA VIN is stamped on the pad. Another original spare DZ block that is cast B 6 9 that I have, the LA VIN is also stamped on the pad. Another original Nov. 68 cast DZ block that I had up until last spring was stamped with the LA VIN by the oil filter.
Hope that helps a little,
Doug

It is interesting to see the november 68 block have the stamp by the oil filter and later blocks have the stamp on the "pad".

On my 69 Z28 RS I have block 3932386 K78 (11/7/68). The code V1114DZ (11/14/68) & Vin# 19N556039 is stamped on the front pad. The trim plate is build date 12A & is a Norwood car. I have no stampings by the oil filter.

I have had 4 original engine LA cars. 09B and 11D had VIN near oil filter, 01B and 01D on pad. Jonesy, seems odd that your 11B is on pad. Maybe they were doing both for awhile? Mark C, I didn't realize that LA started on pad. My 09B car is pretty early and it is near oil filter.

These 4 DZ engines all have the VIN's by the oil filter and the DZ stamps on the front pads smile.gif
by the way 3 are out of the cars they belong to ( 3 of the cars locations are unkown) and one is in a 69 JL8 Crossram Z/28. The one in the JL8 car is non numbers matching but one of those that are on a stand belong to the car smile.gif

I guess vin numbers at least from Van Nuys plant were stamped on engine pad or by the oil filter without any consistancy to build date. Contrary to what is written in Jerry's book.
