4V could be the code on the trim tag. I know of one Impala that has this option and this 4V is on the trim tag. btw-It is the only option on the whole car.

A91 vacuum operated trunk release was issued but cancelled. Aparently none were factory built. It could have been added after the fact. Is your car vacuum or electric?

The power trunk release was not offered as an option on first gen camaros.

The electric trunk release from many other vehicles fits and works very nicely in a first gen, but it was not offered from the factory.

Chris,

As Kurt stated, the Power (Electric) Trunk Release option wasn't offered on the Camaro. However, it was offered on the Firebird. The bird' had a few other optional "niceties" that the Camaro couldn't get, including an optional Power Drivers Seat!

The A91 Vacuum Trunk Release WAS offered on the 68 Camaro but, as Mark stated, was cancelled on November 7, 1967. Up until that time though, you could (supposedly) get it as a "Factory" installed option. No "official" documentation on this though, including no reference to it in any of the options lists, brochures, etc... so are there really any "Factory" installed A91's out there???

However, the Power Vacuum Trunk Release option WAS available to the dealers. Looking at my P&A 34 (parts book) dated November, 1968, in group 12.243:

68 Chevy, Camaro, Chevelle (exc. Sta. Wag., El Camino) 987500 - RELEASE UNIT, vacuum

Also, considering that the Chevy guys and the Pontiac guys (as well as the Buick guys, the Olds guys, the Caddy guys, etc...) had access to the same parts through the GM Parts Distribution Centers, it's not inconceivable that some knowledgable dealers may have ordered the Firebird POWER Trunk Release kit and installed it on the Camaro! Back then, dealers did a lot of "special" things to get the cars out the door!

So...

"Factory" installed Power (Electric) Trunk Release? No.
"Factory" installed Vacuum Trunk Release? Maybe. (BIG maybe!)
"Dealer" installed Power (Electric) Trunk Release? Conceivable.
"Dealer" installed Vacuum Trunk Release? VERY likely.

As a side note, the 1968 AIM states that the A91 option was cancelled on 11-7-67. It also states that the D33 Remote Mirror option was cancelled on 6-21-67, when clearly it was still available! (My May, 1968 built car has one!) Can the AIM really be trusted?!

The dates in the change block on the A.I.M. sheets are not the date something became available or was removed from production; that's the date the A.I.M. sheet was updated to reflect a pending (or already implemented) Engineering Change (the ECR number is also shown as a reference). Scheduling parts into and out of volume production was handled by a separate organization from Engineering (Chevrolet Facilities and Production Planning) which did all the grunt work with the suppliers, the plants, and the Sales department to establish the effective point in production for Engineering Changes. Change dates shown on A.I.M. sheets can be as much as three months prior to or after the actual implementation of a production change.

John,

Thanks, as always! But I'm still confused on the cancellation of the D33 Remote Mirror, cancelled in June, 1967. Even with a three month delay, that wouldn't account for it being on my May, 1968 car. Are you saying that my mirror is Dealer installed? The hole in the door that the cable passes through is definately "stamped", not "drilled". Also, the date code on the glass is "4-DMI-8".

?????

Another thing to consider is this,

Just because the item was cancelled on a certain date does not mean it was not still installled on cars allready in the system, cars on order etc. They may have determined that they could not get the parts or a new design change conflicted with the option. I don't know for a fact but I know this still goes on today. I know some who ordered a new car and wanted a certain color. When he ordered the car everything seemed Ok but he got a call a week later from the dealer saying they could not get the color he wanted because it was cancelled for the rest of the model year. Yet they found one just like he wanted enroute to another dealer.

I have early 1968 Camaro with a factory vacuum truck release and a dozen other rare options. The car was a dealer showroom ordered car with a build date of Oct 1967.

The factory production totals state zero installed in 67 and 68.
Any documentation with the car?
Unless there's factory docs with the car, I'd assume it was dealer installed. I've seen both vacuum and electric releases that were dealer installed.

...

They probably did - just some 'other' 68 GM vehicle, maybe even a Firebird ... but, not a Camaro

They're on eBain all the time - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/67-68-69-CAMARO-FIREBIRD-Power-trunk-release-latch-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ290557808735QQptZLHQ5fDefa ultDomainQ5f100

Mike, do you know if this car is still around? I'd like to add it to the db since it has that strange option code.
