Should you use 5.7 or 6.0 rods when building a 383? What are the + and -'s of both? My machine shop/engine builder wants to know which rods I am using. Any advice appreciated!

The 6" rods would be a better choice if $$ is no concern. The 6" rods will hold the piston at TDC longer alowing more air fuel mixture to inter the chamber for more power. They also put less stress on the cylender walls and rings. And raise the RPM potential of the motor by holding the piston at TDC and BDC longer creates less stress on the lower end by slowing the rate that the piston changes directrion. The higher pin location also reduces the mass of the piston. That is the best I know to explain it.

I have a 383 and Iam using 5.7 rods because I did'nt want to have the extra block work done to have the block notched there are many +&- its up to you.I'm very satisfied with my engine

Thanks for the replies! I can actually say (for the 1st time probably in my life) that on this engine money is of little concern. The builder wants to use 6.0 rods. I just want to make sure that is the best choice. Keep the advice coming! Thanks.

5.7 rods will make a great 383, but IMHO the 6.0 will improve it even further. If you can swing it.. go for it. The torque increase alone is worth the extra coin.
