whats he engine codes on the front pad or the pad down near the oil filter?
click Oct 28th, 03, 06:26 AM Chevy by the numbers concurs that the 3932386 block was used in many different engines from the 327 to the 350 to the 302. Also the 3932388 was used in the same engines at times.
The ...386 block is pretty common actually. I hope it turns out to be a Z but what about a build sheet on top of the gas tank???
Its an LA built car so be sure to check for it, that would be your only 100% sure way to know what the car was built as originally.

HwyStarJoe Oct 28th, 03, 06:37 AM Get the engine stamping and partial VIN stamping from the pad on the block.
http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#EngineNumbers
artsylmk Oct 28th, 03, 05:47 PM The engine stamp in the front was real hard to read. I could see that the last 2 numbers or letters that I could read was DZ. The build sheet is on top of the tank but is covered with undercoating and is very difficult if not impossible to read. I know I can get the undercoating off bot how to get it readable is another question.
HawaiianCamaro Oct 28th, 03, 09:55 PM DZ = 69 302 engine
is there also a partial VIN stamped nearby or down by the oil filter. It should be 19L529358
be real carefull if you try to take the build sheet off the trunk. If it can be read without and after the undercoating is removed take a pic and send a copy my way will you please.
click Oct 29th, 03, 05:06 AM CSI where are you? That will be a neat project getting your build sheet off the tank covered with undercoating and try to read it. PROTECT is carefully as that piece of paper can mean the difference in thousands of dollars in value to your car. As Jeff suggested be carefull with it. If you can scrape the whole sheet off in one piece with the coating, then put in a large plastic baggie zip lock it and then scan it so we can see what it looks like, then folks can offer suggestions on how to clean it up.
This will be a very interesting project and lesson.
Good find. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Kurt S Oct 30th, 03, 04:40 AM You'll need to clean the pad and see what it says. That's an important #.
If the pad has been decked, this will help show the #'s, http://www.camaros.org/public/acidetch.txt.
Be careful with that sheet!
artsylmk Nov 21st, 03, 04:22 PM HawaiianCamaro,
Thanks for the information. Finally got the # by the oil filter. It has 3 sets of numbers with 3 on each line on top of each other. It reads: 64N386371. Another # by the oil filter is 3932386. The numbers on the pad are all most impossible to read, Engine could have been decked. We got the buildsheet off using un-du Adhesive Remover. It is a great remover of tar etc as well as adhesives. Got a lot of numbers of the sheet and where readable we have atleast 8 different matches for a Z28. The only 2 numbers we could read on the serial number were the last 2. Both of those numbers matched the last 2 of the VIN#. Also the body identity numbers match the cowl tag numbers.
Jonesy Nov 22nd, 03, 06:01 AM The 386 block is probably not the original block. You car is built too late for the time period that block was used.
artsylmk Nov 23rd, 03, 04:20 AM Since it mat not be the original 302, how would this affect the purchasing price. The tranny is not original but we do have some of the buildsheet that states the car is a real Z28. Sure was hoping the engine was original.
artsylmk Nov 25th, 03, 02:39 PM Do you guys see any possibility of the 302 motor being the original 302? Besides the stamping on the engine is there anywhere else a date could be?
JohnZ Nov 26th, 03, 04:10 PM The date the block was cast is on the passenger side of the block on the bellhousing flange area, opposite of where the block casting number is on the driver's side. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
