I was wondering if you can tell if a 68 car is an SS by the vin tag? I am going to look at one and don't know much about the 68 models. The guy said this car is a true SS but it has a 10 bolt rear and single leaf springs. I had always thought that the SS had 12 bolt rear ends with mutli leaf springs. Any help would be appreciated.

68s are the hardest to tell via the VIN or the cowl tag. You almost need some paper work of some sort to document a 68.

you are correct all 68 SS's came with 12 bolt rearends and multileaf springs.

there is no easy way to verify a 68 SS so you need to look for a number of key items

All SS's came with:

12 bolt rearends and multileaf springs,
Dual Exhaust (look for hanger behind drivers seat on frame rail)'
Special hood which utilized longer springs. i'm pretty sure its 26 coils (SS) vs. 24 coils on standard hoods., correction 28 coils (ss)vs. 26 coils (standard)

most also included disc front brakes and two fuel lines, but not all.

Corrections:

68's did not use 2 fuel lines.
Disc brakes were an option so not all SS models have them. I've seen several drum brake SS-396's. Martin
