I have a numbers matching X55 69. Does anyone know what kind of production numbers there were for the X55. Is the X55 rarer then the other x codes for SS. Please let me know. Great site. Thanks. Dave in Iowa

There are no statistics on combinations of options. Thus no one knows how many Camaro SS350s were built without style trim group. There were 21,273 SS350s built in '69.

I find it unusual that we concern ourselves with "rarity" when many of todays most collectible musclecars (Z/28, Chevelle SS, GTO) were built in large quantities and were never "rare" to begin with. Some options or colors that are rare are so because no one wanted them.

William has it right on.

On another note, yellow and orange colored Camaro are highly prized today when back in 1969 era no one wanted to be caught dead driving one down the road. I recall the local dealer having one on his lot for a long long time finally someone I know ended up buying it basically because of the low price. He was always being raged on for owning a lemon. I worked for the DOT from 1972 to 2002 and all our trucks were orange. We hated that color.

Check out:

Although there are no known GM records of exactly how many units were built in which colors, the CRG has compiled cowl tag data submitted to them, and this body of data does not support the contention that the Hugger Orange color for 1969 was "unpopular". That database indicates that Hugger Orange, believe it or not, occurs most frequently in the data set, at 12.1% of cowl tag data sets submitted. LeMans Blue and Fathom Green right behind at 12.0 and 11.1%, respectively.

Now, there may be some factors that may skew this data set a bit, such as the fact that these bold colors (esp Hugger Orange and Fathom Green) were more likely to be ordered on high-performance optioned cars, and, the high performance cars may be A)more likely to have survived to this point in time and B) the owners of such cars may be more likely to be submitting their cowl tag data to the CRG...

I DO believe that a six-cylinder hugger orange or daytona yellow car would be more likely to sit unsold on a dealers lot for a while...

I myself am not too crazy about Hugger Orange, only because you see it done so often as a new color choice when folks re-do their cars...but it sure does look good with black stripes on a Z-28...

Just my $.02...
