Did they use the letter I in casting dates? I was told once upan a time they did not. Reason I ask is because there is a DZ block on e-bay I am looking at. V0927 DZ, I 11 8. Any ideas? I think its an L.

Yes, GM did use the Letter I in castings.

Can't be an L with a September assembly date, cause that would be a December casting. I is September, 09/11 cast is a much better match for an 09/27 assembled engine.

My Sept 68 327 block, heads and intake are 'I's. But original distributor is a J.

Kevin

I dont think "I" was used in the stampings on distributors, starters or alternators. So "J" would be September.

GM guidelines for part dating:

Casting (raised) dates = "I" was used.

Stamped dates = "I" was not used.
