Muncie build date Jan 9 1967 at St Louis. It is not the origonal trans. If all the gear spreads are the same it is an M21 if there is a big drop on the 3rd to 4th shift it is an M20. I have never seen an M22 with that early a build date but I could be wrong.

I think the 70 Z28's had a .28 or Z28 on the trim tag. I also remember reading about a .19 or .10 which designated the white or black stripes on the trim tag. Your tag doesn't look like a Z28 tag, but I need to find the exact details.

Try this link. I found it very helpful on my 79. http://www.nastyz28.com/decode.html#trimtag .

There is a link from here to go to Stegmillers Second Gen Decoding. It answered all of my questions.

Jeff is right. The trim tag should have one of the four stamped on the last line: 28.10, 28.19, Z28.10, Z28.19. The "10" is the paint code for white stripes and the "19" is the paint code for black stripes. Doesn't look like a Z-28 based on the trim tag. There are a few other things you can check like a factory rear sway bar with mounts welded to the rear frame rails, a 12 bolt rear, a floor mounted gas pedal unlike the regular camaros, and a 6500 redline tach, and rear bumper guards.

Your tranny is out of a 1967 Corvette.

It has a factory rear sway bar with mounts welded to the rear frame rails, a 12 bolt rear, a floor mounted gas pedal unlike regular camaros, and a 6500 redline tach, and rear bumper guards. I believe that I read that the majority of the Norwood Z28's have the 28.10, or 28.19, but it is not unheard of for it to be ommitted. If it had the stock motor it would be a given. I am having no luck with the engine numbers. What I posted is the best I can do so far. Not sue what to do?????

rjdfly,

It certainly has all of the makings of a Z-28. The vast majority of clones never have the floor mounted pedal or the correct rear sway bar. I'd say very likely it is a Z-28 if these pieces appear to be original. Check the rear end build date to see if it is before the car's build date and check the engine numbers. I would discount the price of the car due to the incorrectly stamped trim tag. It will always be an issue for you at cruise nights, car shows and when you decide to sell it, so factor that into the price you want to pay.

The car was built in June and the Rear End was built in Feb. (COV0226G1) as well as 67890, 1234, 320
I own it and so far so good!!! Would like to have enough info to deal with car meets and future sale. I wish I could get an understanding of the engine numbers.

I do not believe the rear looks original to the car. First a build date of 4 mos. prior is too long, secondly and more importantly it decodes as a 3.31 posi which came in SS cars. I'm fairly certain Z's only came w/3.73's standard and 4.10 optional.

I didn't see that you posted any engine numbers yet??
