Glad you want to return it back to the road. As for the Cowl tag and making it legal for you to register. Take all the paperwork if any + the bill of sale to the Dept of Motors Vehicle there in NJ and fill out any required forms. If the VIN is still on the dash check for the partial VIN on the firewall in the area of the Blower motor along with inside of the Cowl on the passengers side. They should be alble to hook you up with whatever you need.

I don't know about your state but in Michigan (and many others) if you were to buy a car from a junk yard etc, you would get a salvage title. Don't know about you but I would never want a vehcile with such as title, now even a ZL1.
This is because of past practices of cutting up junked vehciles and then selling them to unsuspecting people. There was a case of them cutting two firebirds in half, welding them the good parts together. That car failed and people were killed. Many times these vehicles have been involved in crashs causing death, or the vehicle was nothing but problems. Some yards were piecing these cars together, they did not care about how safe or reloable they would be, they just saw a chance to make a $$.
To get a title you will need a Bill of Sale. I would say you just bought yourself a parts car.

Actually, in MI, if you show proof of ownership (in some form), the state police will inspect the car for the VIN and issue a title.
But your note is very unclear. It says the trim tag is gone. This tag is not legally required. What is required is the VIN tag that is in the door jamb. Is it there?

I didn't know there were any first gens still in junk yards in jersey.! all the ones I've been too just laugh when you ask them. anyway, get the vin and go to the Trenton DMV office and apply for lost title work. If it has not been stolen, you should get the dup. Once you have that you can use the bill of sale and the dup title to get a new one and I don't think NJ has a "salvaged" title. Just title it, don't register it, you have to have insurance to register and you can't insure an non-running car. If there is any issues with it being stolen or no Vin number, you have to contact the State Police office in Hammonton for assistance.
I had to do this for a 66 chevy truck I bought at auction. I even had to tow the truck to Hammonton with my 66 Pontiac tempest. What a chore it was to flat tow a 3/4 ton C-20 with the Tempest. I'm glad I lived after that trip.

You may learn it is already "titled".
The tags may have been swapped onto another Camaro. If so NJ should be able to issue a state VIN tag and title.
