How do you tell if a LA car is a real Z28? I know that some of the norwood cars have "X" codes, but is there a for sure way to tell on a LA car. I'm guessing 4 leaf multi springs, dual exhaust hanger on frame rail. What else can I look for? I need help quickly as I will be looking at this car soon. Thanks for any help..... Also will the numbers on the back of the block drivers side verify 302?

There is no way to prove the originality of an L.A. Z/28 with out original paperwork (protecto plate, chassis build sheet, etc.) There are many things to look for to see if it's a "correct" car. 4 leaf springs are one of them. The casting number on the block you are referring to really doesn't prove much. There were 3 casting numbers used for the 69 Z/28. The date code in the same location on the drivers side is a much better indicator but still not total proof as a block can be replaced. You can cross reference the build date on the block with the build date on your cowl tag. The stamping on the front pad should end with a DZ but re-stamping does occur and that is not total proof. If you can tell that the top of the block has not been decked and the correct stampings are on the pad then I would feel comfortable it was an original DZ 302. That still doesn't prove that it is an original Z/28 car. The VIN stamping on the block would be the next thing I would look for. It would be on the pad before the stamping that ends in DZ. It could also be stamped right above the oil filter on the side of the block in the rough casting area. It's not easy to read these stampings. These VIN numbers should match the last 6 digits of the VIN on the dash. I could go on but since you are looking at an LA car, most of them have the chassis build sheet sandwiched between the body and the gas tank. If you are looking at a car that the gas tank has not been removed and it hasn't seen a whole lot of weather odds are it's there. I've got mine and it's 95% ledgeable and has specific codes along with the VIN that are specific to Z/28's. This is absolute proof that the car is a factory Z/28. There are many, many other things to look for but even if they are there it doesn't prove that it was an original. Hope this helps,
