I've got a 69 I've had for several years. I bought it at the time for an RS Z/28 car. I was younger and dumber to the trim tag codes then. Of course the car had been drag raced some in it's life so the original engine and trans were gone from the car. The seller stated that it originally was a 302 car with a 4 speed. It had an auto. in it and a 350 when I got it. The clutch pedal was still in it.I saw that it had a hole in the tunnel for the 4 speed shifter. It had power disc brakes on it,and a 3.73 12 bolt posi. Problem is it looks to have the late style 69 trim tag, but no X code on it. Is it worth sinking a heap of money on a resto not being able to prove it's a Z?

P.S.
The VIN and trim tags are as follows although I don't guess there much use. I know original color, interior, and vinyl top but maybe someone can pick something else out.
124379N556649
ST69 12437 NOR201316 BDY
TR 712 76 BPNT
12A
Notice no X code. This is a late 69 style tag from what books have told me. No protectoplate or build sheet is with it. Been told to look under rear seat and top of gas tank for a build sheet but not there. Any help/advice would be appreciated

This car was built in the First week (A)of December (12) 1968. Although I have seen one Z28 with an X33 code built on 11D and another 12B, it does not appear the X codes saw widespread use on other models untill Jan of 1969. 1969 model years VIN sequence numbers (124379N556649) started at 500001 and went up (seen one with a seqnence of 703511 built October of 19690, production of 1969 Models started in first week August of 1968.

Not much more I can tell you than you allready know. You will need some original paperwork to know more about the car.

The 69 trim tag style changed right around when your car was built (12A), but the X codes were not yet implemented until later in the month. Although there are some cars with the X code prior to 12B they only represent a small percentage of the cars that should have received them. At this point it is not known why a few have the code and the rest don't.

Where does the speedometer cable go thru the firewall. The engine side of the steering column or the fender side?

Does it have the original rear axle and multileaf springs? How many leafs, and what is the assembly code on the front of the passenger side axle tube?

Does it have a 3" by 5" plate welded to the side of the rear frame on the drivers side just behind the shock absorber?

The car has the plate on the drivers frame rail right behind the shock. The rear differential tube #'s are BU 1204G2. The ring gear #'s are 3862525 11.41 11 68. The 12 bolt has 4 leaves. The speedometer cable is routed out of a hole in the firewall between engine and column. I can see a hole in the firewall between column and fenderwell with a grommet in it. I guess this is for the speedo in a different application? Hope this helps!

Has all the makings of a real Z.
