I pulled these off the 67 RS when I rebuilt the car. I've never seen any shock plates that look like them before. It kinda looks like they were suppose to have rods or bars that went towards the eye of the spring. Anybody know?? There's no part # on them either. All I can say is they look very generic, as the bolt holes are oblong and there are four possible points to mount the shocks. I have no idea what the extension is for.

Hi guys,
Those are Ansen traction bars. the long end went toward the rear and a long piece of bar stock went forward and clamped to the spring just behind the front spring eye.

I had a set on my 67 a long time ago.
They were made so you could remove the rear bolt for street use.

Thanks dave. I was hoping you would respond, had a feeling you might know. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif Wow, ansen traction bars huh. That's interesting. I didn't know ansen had ever made them. How old do you think they are? I'm assuming they came with the bar stock & clamps when new? I have a hurst comp shifter that dates from the late 60's to 71 according to hurst. I left it in the car, still works good. By the way you explained it, when the bar stock was attached, the ride was to stiff for the street? Would like to know more about them. I guess I'll add them to some more of my nostalgia hot rod parts, they look cool, but there are better parts available now. Maybe someday I'll build something nostalgic and use the parts I have hanging around. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Excuse me if I sound like I'm rambling, had a wisdom pulled a few hours ago, got those pain meds you know. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Stevo,

My homemade "slapper" traction bars would work the same way if I snug them up solid to the spring eye. The only trouble is that the spring becomes solid. I figure if I did tighten them up that I would bend them because they would be taking all the load. And this post verified it.
Thanks guy's. pdq67

pdq67, does that mean you won't be using the ones you made? Were they experimental? It does sound like the setup makes it too solid. Would like to see them someday. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

I don't remember them making the ride that much stiffer but the car oversteered like nobody's business.
If you clamp the front end of the bar, it turns your rear end housing into a giant sway bar! Oversteer city!
I remember them coming out around 1970.
I had a friend who bought a 70' Z/28 and he tried them and then sold them to me.
The idea behind them was you could unbolt the rear bolt for street use, then put the bolt back in for the drags.

Stevo,
I'm going to use my slapper bars. As far as I'm concerned, they work great, although "noisy" when they "slap" solid because my front adjusters are 1/2" steel bolts.

They are real easy to make. Take a pair of bottom spring/shock mounts and notch them down the middle until a piece of 1/2" x 2" x ?" length steel cold rolled will fit and weld solid. Then add a front adjustment nut and bolt to adjust slap take-up so that it hits right in the middle of the spring "eye". Next add a cross piece so far back from the front with bolts so that a top piece can be bolted on it and adjusted so that when you hit your brakes, the front is restained and doesn't go down and hit the ground.
Adjust, and check burn-out tracks until it "feels good" and tracks straight and even. pdq67
