View Full Version : New Wilwood Big Brake Kit
Mean 69 Sep 22nd, 02, 09:14 AM I was poking around Wilwood's web site the other day, and noticed that they are now marketing the big brake kit with their newer 6 piston calipers. I have heard some drawbacks from the previous front brake kits, okay for street but maybe not as heavy duty as one would need for track events, etc.
Anyone here run these, or know anyone that does? They have offered a kit for the late model Camaro's for about a year, so someone should have some experience at this point.
If anyone that knows what to look for in brakes, I'd appreciate some feedback. My other alternative is to go with the late model 'vette setup, which I had intended to do, but these look pretty sweet. I had the smaller setup years ago on my Chevelle, and though I never really pushed hard on the brakes with that car, I recall the quality of the goods was excellent. Aluminum hubs, seperate rotor/hat, great hardware, etc.
I am guessing the price for the new kit will be around $1200, front's only. But, if you compare with Baer for a full set, the price is very similar in that the rotors are two piece.
Thoughts?

Mean 69 Sep 22nd, 02, 09:18 AM By the way, here's the link to their website. The kits are listed down a ways on this page.
Think they'd give me a free set for some testing?!

davidpozzi Sep 22nd, 02, 10:49 AM I believe the piston area of this caliper is pretty small. It is made to work on a late model Camaro system which uses smaller front pistons and smaller master cyl.
I've heard a good four piston caliper is better feeling than a sliding type caliper.
Don't think the Willwood does has dust seals.
That is a large caliper, make sure it clears everything, also check upper A frame clearance.
Other Willwood systems have been dissapointing, too small and too much flex in the calipers.
A local guy has those 6 piston calipers on his 69 Mustang for open track use. They seem to work OK.

Torker Sep 24th, 02, 07:09 PM The Wilwood kit uses a 13" x 1.1" a curved 32 vane rotor, aluminum hat and hub, and a six piston billet superlight III caliper. The piston volume is less than stock GM single piston calipers but more than a PBR caliper. Thus, for a power brake set up a 1" master cyln. would be a good place to start. A 12" set up is not available nor is a 1.25" thick rotor.
The cost however is pretty steep, about $1650 - just for the front.
Also the pads in that kit are not street pads and will make noise. Figure in the additional purchase of a 'Q' compound pad for street use.
I considered going this route myself and had a few lengthy conversations with wilwood, but I decided to instead go with the PBR route. In my opinion, for that price it just wasn't worth it.
chacane67 Sep 24th, 02, 08:46 PM and it is eaiser to go TO the local parts store and get replacement pads, rotors, piston and seal kits and you dont have to wait for UPS to show up with your parts.
PBR is a road going caliper with all applicable seals. They have also been proven on the street as well as just about every track I have been to. It is pretty hard to beat what Baer has to offer for the money.

Mean 69 Sep 25th, 02, 06:05 AM Yikes! That price is more than I thought. I'll have to agree, looks like my money is better spent elsewhere. I have actually had the PBR units on a late model Mustang, with 13" rotors, and was really happy with it.
Chacane: Wow, nice car. A fellow San Diegan! Planning on attending the Vintage race the weekend of Oct 12 on North Island? We should hook up, tell stories, etc. I hope to have my car there, depends mostly upon uphoulstery..... Shoot me an e-mail if you'd like.

chacane67 Sep 26th, 02, 01:00 PM Yup, I just hope I dont have to go out of town that weekend.
Do you work in the automotive business? Just because.....I know how to reduce the price of Baer products if you OR anyone else is.....
