I have a 71 rearend non posi...how can I find out if it is a camaro or nova or whatever? The codes on the rearend are as follows:
JGG 2288
H21
12(?MAYBE 4)45
67890
GM1
N
1235542
I know that one of these codes tells me that the rearend was built on 2 AUG 71.
What I need help on is finding out if this will work for my 67 RS. The car now has a 9" in it that was just slammed in there and I want it out. Trust my this 9" won't work the way it is.
The dimension from inside to inside of the back plate is 53 3/16".
any help greatly appreciated, Kevin.

It looks like it's a Nova rearend but that stamping JG doesn't match anything. Are you sure it's JG?
That measurement you took is close.... a '68-'79 Nova rear is 53 1/4" back to back.
There aren't any J stampings for 1971 Nova. Could it be JC?

HwyStarJoe,
It definitely is stamped JG G228 2
It almost looks like the first G could be a C, reading: JC G228 2. I know that people make mistakes all the time on the assembly line when it comes to stamping, so it very well could have been a G and the employee tried to restamp it a C.
That link that onovakind67 gave was a little help. It appears that the rearend was stamped by someone on swing shift. My best guess is that it is suppose to be a C smile.gif .
I remeasured the inside to inside back plate again in three different places and it does come out to be 53 1/4"
With your guys help, which I greatly appreciate, sounds like that 9" is gone and this '71 Nova rearend is going to find a new home.
Thaks a lot.

Kevin, I used to have a JD rear from a 72 (nova?) that was undocumented too. It fit fine on my 69.
We talked about JD rears here:

Is your JG rear a mono leaf rear? It should fit fine on your 67.

Kevin is right... I guess the bottom line is that it'll definitely fit in your car, no matter what stamping it turns out to be. smile.gif And I doubt there's any website that is 100% accurate and correct with 100% of the information someone could need.
Except maybe TC!
