Im restorin/modding my 68 camaro. im trying to keep a sleeper vibe going about the car and i wanted to know how accurate the factory tachs are as i dont really want an aftermarket one in it.

North Holleywood Speedometer and Clock can do a VDO conversion that maintains the exact factory look. It is very accurate, has a fast sweep action, and looks perfect. There is no visual difference from the original unless you look at the back of the gauge package.

Good question, I was thinking of posting the same question. I bought an original 69 Z-28 tach for my car.
I see your from Milford, some snow. I live in Trumbull seems we got about 12".
I'm going to get a digital timing gun and check it out. I'll know this week.

You got it. I'm putting in the door speakers today. I'm doing the finishing touches to the interior before it goes to Walt Carrol. He does all the custom interiors for the street roders. I'm going to get a custom done inside. Going for that different look since I've changed most of the drive tran. of the car.
I hear you about tring to keep the sleeper look. I like the stock look outside, and custom under the hood, and a custom interior.
people just don't know what I have under the hood. They just know it's big. No Z-28 painted stripes, just emblems.
With days like this you can get alot done.

I ran my stock tach and an Autometer pro-comp at the same time in my 69 and found at idle they were the same,at around 3400 cruising it was 100-200 rpm's off.Up at 7000 was worse,more like 300-400.The factory one was always on the low side.

I'm not far across the state line in NY. I just got 24" of snow. Needless to say, it sure provides for some garage time in between shoveling! As far as the stock tach goes, my concern would be the speed of the sweep. My 355 is a high winder and I hadn't gotten around to thinking about that aspect. Good post. What kind of price does Hollywood get for their conversion?

Im not sure what they charge for the conversion. I emailed them yesterday so hopefully ill here back from them after the holiday. Ill post it as soon as i find out the cost.

The conversion cost $200 back in January 1999. It's a good thing I never added up all these receipts!

If you decide to have them do the work request that the cover used over the back of the tach be cut as short as possible. The VDO movement and electronics package is smaller than the original, however, if the new protective cover is too long it will it the steering column support bars before the instrument cluster fully seats.

My '68 BB SS has been an on-going project for over 20 years now! Just got console gauges for Christmas. Hope to start a frame off this summer and do the gauge/tach switch over.
