View Full Version : Coil Spring Advice
paulm Mar 24th, 02, 04:03 PM I have the original coil springs in my 69 convertible. I just took the front end apart to replace all of the bushings, etc. Should I assume that the original coil springs are bad and replace them or just reuse them? My car is all stock, so it's not like I'm making any major changes to the car.....Just restoring it to it's original condition.
kz1000ltd Mar 24th, 02, 05:09 PM Common sense suggests you may as well replace them while you're in there, they aren't too expensive either. If they look like the original springs, chances are good they're shot anyway. I say go for it......KZ

boodlefoof Mar 24th, 02, 05:10 PM I would suggest replacing them. They are undoubtedly sagging and not performing at optimum levels.
With that said, I replaced my old stockers with "stock replacement springs." I didn't think the old ones were sagging as bad as they were and when I replaced them... the car stood about 2'' higher! So, look into some dropped coils, or plan on cutting the stockers you buy if you replace yours. Unless you want your car to sit like mine...

paulm Mar 24th, 02, 05:13 PM Thanks!!
That was going to be my next question....Which springs to use to keep the stock look and feel.
CFunK Mar 25th, 02, 11:40 AM What is the fender lip to ground height on the front end?

Sorry, that question was directed to boodlefoof.

boodlefoof Mar 25th, 02, 02:00 PM I don't know, haven't measured it. At present I am away from the car and probably can't get to it to measure for some time. It is about 2'' higher than it was with the old sagging coils though. Just a guesstimate... the tires are about 25.5'' diameter... plus about a 2-3'' gap between tire and fender if not more. I would guess 28'' or more is the fender lip to ground distance.

I was just curious as my 67 is 27" and that is with 34 year old springs.

boodlefoof Mar 25th, 02, 05:55 PM I will try to get you an accurate measurement as soon as I can, but it may be a month or more until I get back to the car (soon exams will be over and I will be back home).
CFunK Mar 25th, 02, 08:30 PM No biggie. Since I got the rear springs installed vehicle height has been an obsession. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
Your name will stick and when I see it again in a couple of months the question will pop again. Hell, if I ever saw your car on the street I would be crawling under it looking for the transfer case, http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif
JK, it a sweet looking ride.

boodlefoof Mar 26th, 02, 04:12 AM yeah... I have gotten a few comments about that... The guy at the auto parts store one time asked if my Camaro was 4WD and that is when I knew it was time to think about lowering it back down. Hopefully this summer it will drop a bit.
Shoot me an email in mid-May sometime to remind me and I will measure it for you.
