Hi guys,
I bought a used steering box that has been rebuilt with a tighter ratio. I bought a new GM rag joint for the box and attempted to install it but with little success. I researched David Pozzi's site (excillent site) and tryed to mimic the picture and follow the directions. My problem I found out was the new steering box's shaft is just shy of 3/4" dia., yet the old box it is replacing has a shaft that is 7/8" dia. I believe I am over tightening the bolt on the rag joint. I need to find the correct rag joint. Here are some numbers I took off the new box: -5691676-;box cover had WGC 2921 on it. The old box is: -5687962 w/ 278 on the cover. I hope this will help in the search. Thanks for the help eveyone.

Here are some coupler numbers:
group 6.525:

7806390 Coupler for 67-69 (or any pre-1977) PS only, fits LARGE 13/16" OD shaft. (Will NOT work on post 77 PS shafts with flat.)

7826542 Coupler for 1977 and later PS/MANUAL with SMALL 3/4" dia shaft ( For later style shafts with flat, or non-flat type) Used on 77-79 camaro, 77-86 Pickups.

7806391 Coupler for 67-69 Manual only steering box SMALL 3/4" shaft. (will not work on late PS with flat)

Pinch bolt 7807271 fits all couplers.

I think 7826542 should work for your box. Later boxes have a flat on the shaft, if yours has the flat, use this late coupler.

I just looked up the flex coupling part numbers at GM Parts Direct:

7806390 13/16 flange w/flat - not available
7826542 3/4 flange w/flat w/power strg $120.74
7806391 3/4 flange w/flat w/manual strg $94.28

Good luck,
Jim

Thanks Dave; thanks Jim,
That clears up the mystery, but wow 120 bucks. I hope I can hit up NAPA for a cheaper one. Thanks again, I can move on with my project.

Jim,
those are list prices, below the list price in red is their sale price which is $60.00 for #7826542

You might try a PS vendor for a coupler. Lee sells them, and I think cheaper than GM, but I dont' recall the price.
