hi,
i neeed to restore my brake calipers. In my service manual and chilton manual, it is told i need to replace o rings, piston and bushings and... Where can i buy a restoration kit? i have 1 piston brake calipers on a 68 camaro. Guess that is not original. I hope these are 69 camaro calipers but am not sure. Are all 1 piston calipers the same? how can i know which one mine is, to buy the right restoration kit?
thanks to tell me.

Marc, chances are that your single piston calipers are the '69 type unless you are running some custom setup (bigger brakes or aftermarket performance). Rebuilding calipers was never my specialty- I always found it easier and cheaper to replace them with factory reconditioned units. Since you are outside of the US I don't know how easy it is for you to find American car parts, but I would try to replace them if you can.

Marc,

There are rebuild kits available but they usually only come with the O-rings. The piston is offered as a seperate component.

For $13.49 each you can get rebuilt, unloaded (no pads) calipers from http://www.rockauto.com If you want a Raybestos rebuilt caliper with pads it's just over $33 each. Rockauto has some of the lowest prices on new and rebuilt parts.

Marc if you go with rebuilt they will need your old calipers. The core value is about 50.00 each.

There's no core charge from Rockauto on single piston '69-up Raybestos unloaded calipers. Just order them online and don't tell anyone ;)

thanks that is great info ;) !
to be certain of the caliper i have on my car, here is the info i got when removing a wheel.
Delco Morane 5473, 510

the width between the 2 bolts screwed on the bracket is 7 inch.

My rotors are vented, 11 " in diameter and 15/16 inch thick.

do you recognize these measurement as '69 camaro calipers?

about the raybestos calipers : are they good parts? so cheap? should you honestly buy it?
would i really improve stopping distances by buying SSBC force 10 2 pistons aluminium calipers for my aplication (if possible)?

thanks to tell me.

Hey Marc

More than likely if you swap it out for a rebuilt you may not get one excactly as the one you are to rebuild. That single piston caliper covered several years and models with variations in the castings. Of course I have been dealing with Napa, Auto Zone, Kragen, and TBA. Seems they all get their parts from the same warehouse here where I live.

Marc,
This photo shows a 69 caliper on the right. I don't have any way to identify by the numbers you posted but this is what my 69 calipers look like.

They are called "V back" calipers because of the large V shaped casting on the backside.

New camaro rotors should be 1" thick. If yours are 15/16" thick they are worn out!!!

New rotors will work much better, or if you want to upgrade, consider a Baer type brake system. I don't like the Willwood or Stainless Steel Brake systems at all.

Could i install these calipers on my camaro?
Or which PBR calipers could i install?
If i need to custom made a caliper, that is still doable isn't it?

As Bear offer PBR caliper, why shouldn't it be possible to make your own system, thinking about your CBB (David) but actualized to modern brake systems....
